Here is a good one! We bought some cuban cigars in Cozumal Mex. and paid for them with a $20.00 bill and the only change I got back was 2 smaller cigars. They don't have change or thats what they say...Any more stories like this one ? Jim in Missouri
Most of the shops we went to in Playa Del Carmen didn't have american money to give us back as change and gave us back their money instead. I didn't like that because you really don't know if they are over charging you on your next purchase when you are trying to get rid of their money.
Demand change in American currency or tell them you will take your business elsewhere. They will find the currency. It also pays to know what the current exchange rate is. Short of using Pesos it is the best way to ensure you are getting your moneys worth. Many times you can actually get a better rate if you are aware of the rates. Example is if the exchange rate is 8.9/1 US and you see something that is agreed to be sold for 1,000N$ or 1,000 new pesos you might get it for $10 US or a rate of 10/1 US
