There is always a charge for Maegan's Bay. You need to take a cab over the hill from the port to Maegan's Bay. When you get to the entrance of Maegan's Bay they have a booth where they collect the fee( I think it is$4.00 for each adult). You then pay the cabby's fare when they drop you at the beach. You can avoid the beach fee if you get there extra early before the toll collector gets to her booth (Probably before 9:00 AM).
I went there a couple weeks ago. I was cruising on board Oasis of the Seas. When we docked there were open back taxis charging $9 each way for transportation and then when you arrive at the beach everyone over the age of 11 years old had to pay an extra $4 to enter the beach. Hope that helps
Also in my opinion the beach was a bit of a disappointment. A view shared by most people i talked to in the bar. In fact the bar was probably the only good bit about the place. Great cocktails costing about $7.50 (cans of beer $4.50) and good music. One thing i will say though is that when i went there apparently the week before there had been a lot of rain. Which could be why the beach wasn't as pleasing to the eye (or nose :s ) as what the pictures would have you believe
Have been going to Megans bay for over 30 years and this beach is considered one of the top 10 beaches of all and we would not miss it on any trip to St THOMAS. We have never been disappointed on any visit.
Sorry to be a stickler here but I learned recently that apparently the locals care about the name....
"... know the proper spelling of Magens? Visitors can be forgiven for calling it Megans, Megan's or Magen's. They can likewise be forgiven for referring to St John as St Johns or St John's or Jost Van Dyke as Yost or Charlotte Amalie as Charlotte.
Forgive me for being a bit of a purist but the history of the Danish Magens family who came from St Croix and settled here on St Thomas should be preserved and passed on. Even if nobody gives a rat's patootie about history, at least get the spelling right...."
