Default Carnival VS Royal Caribbean

I have a friend who is going to take a cruise in Feb. She has been offered a package with Carnival and Royal Caribbean. Same 7-day Mexican Riviera itinerary, pretty much same pricing. She was asking me which would be better for her and her family. Three children ranging from age 10 to 15. I have only sailed on Carnival so I can give her my opinion on one side of the coin. Anyone care to give their views on comparing the lines.

Thanks in advance

Melanie

The Carnival ship she would be sailing on would be the Pride and the RCC ship would be the Vision of the Sea. Hopefully there is someone out there who has been on both??

Having sailed both lines I would go for RCCL.

Paul and Carol,

Can I ask some specifics about why you both prefer RCCL? I am planning a cruise for November, 2004 for a group of my girlfriends and will be going on either CCL or RCCL.

My son and I are happily going on the Fantasy in January - we determined we wanted the excitment and "busyness" of Carnival, but I'm wondering if I wouldn't like to try something different with my friends.

thanks!

I have cruised with carnival about 7 times and with RCI 8 times. I felt that overall I received better service on RCI, and the design of the RCI ships was more to my liking.

It basically depends on what you like. Carnival has more comedians and x rated comedy shows at midnight. RCI is more laid back and has some highlight entertainers. Food varies from ship to ship.

It might depend on the ports. If the Carnival ports are more to your liking, take Carnival. If the RCI ports are better, take RCI. If they are the same, I would tke RCI.

The Explorer of the Seas is a beautiful classy ship. I enjoyed seeing the beautiful columns and dolphins at the pool. However, in all fairness the only Carnival ship I have sailed on was the Inspiration which is an older ship. I understand the newer Carnival ships are more beautiful and possibly on a par with RCCl.

I have sailed on both Carnival and Royal Caribbean. These are the differences I found:

1. Carnival is a party ship. Clubs, bars, music, casino, etc stayed open much later than Royal Caribbean.

2. Pools on Carnival are open to all. RCCL will have one pool adult only leaving the other pool very crowded if you have kids.

3. Carnival is more lenient about kids using the hot tubs.

4. Dining room service is better on RCCL. Food is about the same however.

5. Carnival cabin is bigger than RCCL.

6. Broadway or Vegas style show is better on Carnival. Entertainer is better on RCCL.

7. Carnival has more live band music at night. Carnival has adult comdey on some nights.

8. Personal services and friendliness of crew are better on RCCL. Carnival used to be on par, but personal services and friendliness have gone down after the automatic tipping was implemented.

9. RCCL biggest ships have putt putt, rock climbing wall, and ice skating ring.

10. Carnival kids program is better.

RCCL Vision of the Sea is an older ship (1998) and not the biggest ship. Carnival Pride is a newer ship (2002). Since both ships are about the same tonnage and offer the same amenities, I would go with the Pride because it is newer.

Thanks Plano! I have cut out your review for future discussion among my friends and I. We are divided - half of us like the "party" atomosphere and the other half a more sedate atmosphere.

I'[ve sailed on both and been on the Pride as well but not VOS.

Here's some more observations:

Food selection is more varied on Carnival, quality is good on both.

Cabins much larger on Carnival.

Drink prices are cheaper on RCI, Carnival is more expensive.

More entertainment throughout the ship on Carnival, quality entertainment better on RCI.

Casinos are larger on Carnival.

Service was varied from ship to ship. Just depends on the ship and Hospitality Mgr.

I have been on both lines and will tell you up front I like Carnival better. But here are some differences.

1. Excursions are much much much cheaper on Carnival. Shark Ray Alley in BElize is $92 on Royal and Carnival said theirs was $62 a person.

2. Sushi - if you like it - is available everyday on Carnival and personally I like their food better in general.

3. Layout of ships I like Carnival. Carnival has more open space to sit by the railing. RCL you have to look through green glass or have to sit with the jogging track between you and the railing.

4. I like the option of more nightlife on Carnival if I want to stay up.

5. Royal is more elegant and Carnival is more fun to me. Carnival seems to offer more that is fun. I'm not talking party either. Personally the most partying I have ever seen on any ship in the 16 cruises I've been on and the most drunkeness was on the Royal Caribbean Rhapsody out of Galveston.

6. Cabins on Royal are a lot smaller and so is the shower! Also the hallways are much bigger and wider on Carnival.

These are the reasons I like Carnival but seriously some people I know really like the more elegant surroundings of Royal and they are deffinately more elegant. They have their pools open later on Royal as well. I love the adult only pool - very elegant. They do have 24 hour pizza and chili on Royal now. I still think the 24 hour pizza on Carnival is much better though. BUT the chili on Royal was great!

Best suggestion is to tell them to book both of them! Go back to back... We choose for price and ports so we will sail either line or any other main stream line to get what we want.. Debbie

We are probably booking more for departure city and price, but I figured other things tip the scales, as well.

thanks everyone for all the great comparisons! Debbie, I think I'll book one for my friends and the *other* for the trip my sisters and nieces and I are taking....

I've sailed both and would choose the RCCL..they just seem to offer a more relaxed cruise with alot of fun added. Don't get me wrong, the CCL was a blast but I think the service was more personal on the RCCL.
