In my experience, upgrades once on board, do not seem to happen any longer. Virtually every ship I have cruised on has had the requisite " Sorry but ship is full." sign at the pursers desk. Having said that, other than one time, we have always been updraded and get a pleasant surprise when tickets are rec'd. so there' hope yet. Your TA is the one who holds the cards for the most part and the leverage to obtain upgrades. You're going on a cruise, so no matter where your pillow lies, it will be great vacation.

I'm a travel agent and cruise specialist and they don't upgrade cabins on the day of sailing much any more.
However, you might look at doing a guarantee rate on your next cruise - you buy a minimum inside stateroom or a minimum outside stateroom or a minimum balcony stateroom at a reduced rate, and you are then guaranteed the stateroom category that you booked at the very least. Then, when the ship's load is basically finalized, the cruise lines look at the remaining open cabins and upgrade guests with these guarantee staterooms into the higher room categories as possible.
You would need to be a bit flexible, but there isn't much risk involved - in 99% of these stateroom guarantees that I've done in 10 years in the business, my clients have gotten a BIG upgrade of several stateroom categories. They got a very good rate and a upper level stateroom! Also don't be afraid of staterooms to the front or back of the ship, they are really underrated - in my experience, they are lots more private and more quiet than the cabins at mid-ship.
How true on the forward cabins.... We were on the Conquest & got an upgrade from a lower/upper to a 4A inside cabin... We were on the Main (2) deck & on the very front cabin in the bow.... i thought to myself "Rock & Row"... now we did here the anchor & crashing waves at times BUT we did not hear loud intoxicated passengers walk by our cabin door since we were the last door...... No ice machines or elevators.... Speaking of Elevators, people tend to be very loud & gather around elevators for semi-parties..... Nice to sleep through the night without being awakened from a party animal.... Bob & Kathy
That's a load of nonsense about getting there earlier to get a better upgrade. All cabin assignments are done in the office in advance of the sailing. Can you imagine the mess at the pier if they assigned cabins there???????????
John, not true. They assign the cabins a few days before sailing. Actually they assign them earlier than that, like two weeks or better but they finalize them a few days before sailing. Upgrades at the pier ar no longer done. Whoever told you they do not assign the cabins until you check is is mistaken.
Just got a call from my TA we booked a guarenteed 4A (the lowest price for a family of four room) and she said we got bumped up to a 8F a balcony none the less!! . Think we are going to be spoiled on our first cruise. I guess this is what we get for booking a year and a half in advance!!! oh i cant wait.......
