Default Progresso - not taking a tour - help

We are headed to Progresso on our Cruise ship and know nothing about this area. Money is tight so we are not planning on doing a tour so wondered if there is anything right off the ship, least expensive way to get to a beach, etc. Please help.

You can take a taxi or shuttle to a beach or even to town and walk around but if there is anyway possible please find the money to tour the ruins at Chitzen Itza. It will be one of the highlights of your life.

Dependis on how much she like History ro how interesting she finds other cultures. If she is into that then great. If she is interested in something like DisneyWorld or Universal Studios she won't like it. No rides or anything like that.

The ride to Chichen Itza take about 2 hours by bus. If you are taking an 8 yr old- have them pack a book or gameboy for the ride. It is a great tour- highly recommended for most. If you have trouble walking or get tired easily, you might want to pass. I loved it!

We were in Progresso/Merida in August of 2002. We took a city bus to Merida ($8 round-trip per person). I had a guide book and so we toured the city on our own. We then made it back to Progresso were we went to the little market right by the bus station and then walked to the beach. We found a spot, had some refreshments and headed back to the ship. We really enjoyed Merida.
