Default Too Young to Cruise???

I enjoyed cruising so much last year with just me and my girl that I don't think I want to "ruin" the experience by taking our 4 year old son, who we didn't take last year. Does anyone feel that 4 years old is too young to travel?

I personally think that our nights would be cut very short as he's asleep by what 9pm? So that means no clubs or casinos for us, or even later night personal port excursions?

Am I being selfish in thinking this way, or is this the reality that is destin to become the truth if we take him at such a young age?

Thanks

Well I sailed with my 4 yr old Dd and 2 yr old DS.....

They LOVED Camp Carnival so they played there after dinner and Dh and I had a ball at the casino, dancing, shows etc......

We usually got them in the late evening ...not because they were tired...we were tired!...

while not on vaca both my kids go to bed every evening at 7:00pm...they were both ALWAYS up when we went to pick them up...and actually protested leaving...they loved it there so much...they each made a few friends...it was a great! We through scheduling out the window for 8 days.....I wasn't sure how it would work out but I it far exceeded my expectations

Good Luck with your decision.

i agree with you , your not selfish, you just wanna have fun and not be on a scedual!
i would leave him home, we do on the other cruises, our little girl(6) understands. i don't think we would hav as good of a time if we took her!

but to each his own!

I don't think you are selfish. There is family time and there is you and your wife time. Divided up makes for longer and good marriage. The people who know always say make time for yourselves. I believe that, we have been married 35 years and we make time for ourself. We also have plenty of Good Family time also.

I think it TOTALLY depends on your child. If he can stay up late, he would probably enjoy himself in the kids program. However, what will you do if he doesn't, for some reason, like the kids program and wants you pick him up?

Only you know your child. If he's a go with the flow kind of kid, you'll all have a good time. If not, you and your wife might end up spending evenings with him and not in the discos!

You guys make a great point, he was a lil upset when we came home and he saw the pictures we took while swimming with the Dolphins. My wife tries to make it a point that he's involved in everything that we do, which is good... to an extent, some things I feel he is still too young to understand or appreciate and since we're not rich we could save a little money by doing the things that we'll truly enjoy together, alone.

We did Disney World the year before last and I hate to say it, it was a total waste of money because he enjoyed nothing. I mean literally!

I would like to do the Disney Cruise but their prices are a little out of my reach right now. I looked into cruising with Disney and it's at least 3 grand for a family of 3.

I don't think he's too young, if he's a flexible kid otherwise. And I also don't think you're being selfish to want time on your own. I stay home with our 4 year old and 2 year old - if you're selfish, I'm right with you! I adore them, but the thought of spending time with just adults is sooooo attractive!

That's why we chose a Carnival cruise, actually, best of all possibilities. Disney would be too "kiddie" for us (The thought of having Mickey Mouse comforters on the bed was distressing to me, lol).
All I've seen about Camp Carnival makes it sound like the kids could very possibly have more fun than we do! So we can all have time to do what we want to do, some together as a family, some just with adults (or them, just with kids). We may or may not have dinner together as a family at night, I guess we'll play it by ear. For a couple of the excursions, we'll all be together, for a couple we'll do just adult things for a couple of hours before hooking up with the kids.
Camp Carnival has activities scheduled till 10 pm, then after that, the group babysitting rate is quite reasonable (and personally, I MUCH prefer the idea of group babysitting in a central area over private babysitting alone with a stranger in our cabin).
Our 4 year old is totally excited about this trip - mostly just for the waterslide! .

attn: triptakers!
i was the same wat about disney, the "only" reason we took a mickey boat was for my little girl. i was shocked! it was a great cruise for her as well as me. i hate disney with a passion...........till i took this cruise. it is not shoved down your throat or anything of that !
as far a the crew being nice and helpfull.............. carney can't dream about being that good!
the food was also better than the carney trip!
yes it cost more but it was worth it!
and just a note... if your going to pay for sitter service why take them in the fiurst place????????????????????????????????????????????? ??????????????????????????????????????
i personaly wish they had an adults only cruise!
if i wanted to see a kid run around and act bad i would go to chuck e. cheez!

One thing to consider on a Disney Cruise, no casino . . . my husband loves the casino on the cruise. I think the Carnival makes way more sense for your family (if taking the child) because he'll love Camp Carnival - even past his bedtime and you love the Carnival athmosphere. If you're torn about weather or not to take him - only you can answer that but if you take him you'll be plesantly surprised at how much they want to be in the Camp program.

We took our son at age 6 - he told us the whole way there - I don't want to do the camp, I want to stay with you -- until we got there. We put him in the camp the first day and didn't see him the rest of the cruise - his choice. We'd drop him off at 9:00 a.m. go back to get him for lunch, ask if he wanted to stay with us but no . . . off to camp again. And he even wanted to go back every evening. The camp does a wonderful job so if you're worried there - no need to be. Just a matter of, can you live with yourself if you don't take him . . . sounds like you got the guilt even before you make the decision.
