tipping the maitre 'd
do you do it? If so, why? Not against it, just don't know the purpose unless he/she works to change our table or meet some extra need.

Most cruises I never even meet him, and I certainly have never seen a HER as a maitre 'd (I wonder if there is a different term for a female maitre 'd, you know like moussier and moussuise (sp??))

We did not tip him. He never bothered to stop
by our table during the entire cruise. He never
greeted us at the front door. We never saw him.

Re: tipping the maitre 'd
I have tipped 20 dollars every trip I have taken. I also give an extra 20 to my room steward, and my head waiter and the assistant waiter if I have one. The reason I tipped the Maitre' D is because I was under the impression that he is the one that is in charge of the skits we see after dinner, and making sure the dinning room and staff is up to par. If my memory serves me correctly, may of 2002 when I was on the Inspiration the "maitre d" was a woman. I bought the cookbook and had it signed by dinning staff and it says

Oger Bermudez Maitre D Honduras. So I guess the women are called the same.
