Default packing!!!

This will be our first cruise!!! Family of 4 for 7 nights. I am overwhelmed by the amount of items that people bring on board (ie: ice chests, clothes hampers, kitchen sinks). I am curious as to the number of bags or trunks most passengers bring. I realize we will be needing several changes of clothing but I was not sure how to transport the non-clothing items. Any packing advice for us "first timers" would be appreciated.

Hi NewCruiser,
You will find lots of packing tips in this article:

Packing for the whole family

With my husband and myself, we each pack one 26" pullman, then share a garment bag and have all the camera stuff in a carry on, then another carry-on. Just remember for during the day its shorts/t-shirts and pack a few bathing suits, then pack accordingly for each evening at dinner.

only bring 1/2 of your clothes
you spend 75 percent of your time in a swimwuit
a lot of times you only wear an outfit for an hour or two do
you can always wear it again
for dinner bring a skirt or capris with a couple of different tops
to mix and match
same with your husband...except use dockers instead of the skirt
we brought 2 pull suitcases and one garment bag
I had a collapsible bag which I filled with pop and water in miami
and sent this with my luggage
and I packed a collapsible cooler in my luggage and the steward
kept our pop and water on ice
I overpacked ALOT
I only used 3 pair of shorts and about 5 t shirts for my day and late evening wear
they also have a t shirt sale on the ship near the end so if you need extra t shirts
and want a souvenier anyway you can always buy a couple from here

good luck

You darn warm weather cruises have it easy!!
I am (and will until I give my luggage the final zip) fretting over what to bring on a cool weather cruise without packing my whole closet. But I have 130 something days to figure that out.

Perhaps I should post this on the packing board, but has anyone carried on a garment bag? Do they allow you to hang it in the little airplane closet?
If I check it, I am sure it will be abused more than I would like!

Thanks,
Carey

I actually hurt my back carrying luggage after our 1st cruise.....thankfully it was AFTER the cruise! I think it's amost a guarantee most people overpack for their first cruise. We sure did. Most of us learn to pack with experience.
