Default Who has done a New England / Canada crusie

I'm bringing up this post again, hoping that someone who has sailed the New England / Canada will reply.

I'm tossed between the Canada / New England cruise or going south for an eastern Carribean cruise again. Has anyone done this cruise and what can you tell me about it? Also, this cruise sails in September so what kind of wheather should we expect?
Thanks for your help!!
John

We did an Eastern Canada cruise in June on the Miracle. (5 nights roundtrip from NYC with stops at Halafax and St. John). We really enjoyed it! The ports are beautiful, and we're thinking about doing another cruise to New England/Canada in 2006, but with more days/stops. I think the Canadian cruise is a nice change of pace. September is a great time to visit these places (in the autumn the fall colors are phenomenal), but it's not going to be warm enough for swimming/sunbathing. It should be the perfect type of weather for sightseeing/hiking/etc. We had some of the best lobster we've ever eaten in Halifax.

Thanks for your reply!
By any chance, did you drive to the port or fly in? We only live on the Ohio-Pa border and would plan to drive there. I'm wondering what the area is like and how much would it cost to take a taxi into the city?
I never been to NY or any of the other ports and can only imagine of all the places to see. Is there something that we shouldn't miss? I know I asked a lot of questions and any help will be apprieciated.
Thanks
John

Our group of friends is doing this Sept. 24, 2005. Some of us have done the Caribbean so many times we wanted something different. Also, many of us don't like to go Caribbean in the Fall because of the chance of stormy weather.
By going as a group we got great prices-I'm not a TA, just was picked by our friends to put this together. My TA is handling the details & bookings, so no flames, please.

We drove into the port, but for us it was a no-brainer. We only live about 25 miles from the city, on Long Island. I've driven from here to the PA-Ohio border, and it's a long hike. You can do it in one long day of driving. New York is filled with things to see (statue of liberty/southstreet seaport, central park, the empire state building, times square, broadway shows, etc.). New York is a phenominal place to visit in the autumn, since we have great weather. You may want to look into what a flight would cost to get to NY though, because between the cost of gas/tolls/parking it may wind up cheaper to fly (I've seen some reeeeally cheap domestic flights lately). Also, I know that Amtrak runs along PA (I've taken it from NY to Minneapolis), so that's another option, though it's a long trip, and probably not much cheaper than flying. The good thing about Amtrak though is that it takes you right into Penn Station, which is at midtown Manhattan, whereas the airports are not in Manhattan and you'd need to take a taxi or public transportation to get into Manhattan.

I've done the Victory 5 Nights from NYC to Canada last July (2003). It was to celebrate my grandparents 50th Anniversary, besides my parents and grandparents (and myself) the rest of our family were first time cruisers and very impressed with the destinations and the ship itself. We took full advantage of all the onboard activities and games. The ports were beautiful, St.John's has a great Irish population with some awesome pubs (Boddingtons Ale on tap!) and Irish linen boutiques. The ship docks close to everything so you don't need to travel far to see some great sights. In Nova Scotia, we arrived on Canada Day (think the Canadian equivalent of Fourth of July) There were people everywhere and alot of things going on on the docks. Handsome college guys operating rickshaws are pretty much everywhere to shuttle you back and forth, but we preferred walking the short distance to town. There are some great places to shop and see (many on our cruise wandered over to the Casino, but when there's one onboard, what do you need that for?) My family and I took in all the little shops and stopped for a drink at a local pub (we're all very Irish, okay? ;O) There was an amazing store on one of the main streets called 'Freak Lunchbox' that I reccomend to anyone going to the area-you'll notice it because in a neighborhood full of cute little antique houses and storefronts, it's painted bright neon colors..Also stop into any Crystal Shop to see how NOva Scotian crystal is made. I went into the trip with alot of doubt, to me, vacation means going somewhere tropical and sunny, not north (unless I'm going snowboarding or something) but this trip did not disappoint, I reccomend it!

Once again, thanks to all!!!

I haven't flown since leaving the military in 1978, so if we go it will be a 400 mile drive. A lot closer than our usual drives to Jacksonville, Port Canaveral and Tampa. My concern will be getting around in NYC. I would like to park the car either at the pier for an extra day or park some place close and possilbly take a taxi to downtown. Is this possible or a bad idea?

The other problem I have is making a decision. My wife wants to go where it's warm and on Carnival Glory again for the second time with friends from Florida. September 4th is almost booked up and therefore the prices are extremely high now. To me, I rather go on a different ship and explore the Boston- Canada cruise which is priced much more reasonable . I enjoy lighthouses and nautical shops and would hope to see this on the cruise. So you can see my dilemma. We will have to decide soon.

Thanks all fellow cruisemates!!!!!

My husband, daughter and I are going on the Sept. 6 sailing of the Victory...5 day to
NE/Canada...we can't wait. We sailed the Caribbean route on the Victory a couple years ago, and she's a beautiful ship. Thanks for the info on Halifax. We are flying into Newark from Phoenix...got a terrific rate that way rather than fly into NYC. Will take the Amtrak into Penn Station, stay overnight at nearby Howard Johnson's and catch a taxi the next day for the short ride to the pier.
Haven't been able to find anyone on these boards who is sailing the same dates, even though it is a designated reunion cruise. Join us!

You can definitely park at the pier, it is right on the West Side Highway, and there are always cabbies coming up to pick up at the terminals, Also, the USS Intrepid is docked right there as well, so after you park your car you can head over for a little sightseeing and then head into the city. As a former Manhattanite and frequent visitor and cruiser, I find NYC to be one of the most convienient and pleasant ports. Best of luck convincing the wife!!!

Thanks for all the great info and you just made my day!
I'm an old Navy buff and one of my hobbies is collecting photos of aircraft carriers. Everytime we go on vacation, I try to visit some type of dicommissioned ship or museum. Well, It drive my wife crazy, she says once you see one, you seen them all and can't beleive there's so many out there.

On top of that, I see that the price is dropping for Sept 11th. Anyone else going??
