You can rent them but I think they are around $90 for a week for a set of two. Or you can buy them at WalMart for around $38 for a good Motorola model. The range is anywhere from 2 - 5 miles and they work well unless you are in the bowels of the ship. They work on FM signals so they are line of sight and with all the metal in the ship reception is poor. But on outside decks or on balconies they are fine.
We (the men) will sit at the pool bar while in port and the women will be in town shopping and we can communicate just perfectly. They're nice to have so you don't have to set meeting times and places when everyone wants to do different things.
Make sure you get the kind which have sub channels. There is so much chatter on the main channels, if this is all you have you'll end up leaving them in the cabin anyway.
Yes you can rent them on the ship, and maybe even by a pair. But go to Walmart before you leave, and get a pair for less than $40.00. Actually, I think ours was less than $30.00. They work great too ! I could be in our room and my wife in the casino, I we could talk clearly.
Have a great cruise;

Re: walkie talkie
And be courteous of others........keep the volume down, don't talk loudly in public areas and turn them off in some areas (including poolside, buffet, dining rooms and theaters!) No one wants to hear your private conversations.
