Passenger jumps from ship!

Someone on Voyager of the Seas jumped last week. Here is the story from a NJ Paper.
A woman apparently jumped from a cabin of a Royal Caribbean cruise ship as the vessel was headed back to Bayonne this past weekend and she is presumed dead, according to law enforcement officials.

Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said yesterday that information collected from the woman's family and from cruise line representatives have led investigators to conclude that the woman, 67, of Queens, deliberately leaped to her death. DeFazio said the woman was accompanying her son and his family on the Caribbean cruise, aboard the Voyager of the Seas.

"There were indications she'd lost money in the casino on board and she came back to her cabin, went onto the balcony of the cabin, where she appeared to have put a chair against the railing, removed her clothing and went off into the sea below," DeFazio said.

It's believed that the incident happened late Saturday night when the ship was off the coast of South Carolina, DeFazio said.

Investigators reported that an apparent suicide note was left in the woman's cabin, DeFazio said.

"It certainly sounds like a desperate act," DeFazio said.

DeFazio said the cruise line notified the Bayonne Police Department and the U.S. Coast Guard before arriving back at port at the Peninsula at Bayonne Harbor.

Royal Caribbean spokesman Michael Sheehan would say only that the incident has been reported to the FBI. -Ronald Leir

See, this is why I don't gamble. No one ever commits suicide from buying too many shoes!!!

So sorry for the family. A tragic way to end a cruise. My prayers go out to them.

This kind of desperate act requires a particular mindset. This was about more than just losing money in the casino of a cruiseship. It always is. It was just the final straw of many straws, problems or episodes of depression.

I feel sorry for the family as well, but even more so, I feel SO SORRY for the women who felt so desparate that she felt she needed to end her life. What a tragic story.

Yes , this is so sad ! I feel for her family. This will haunt them for a long time to come.
I too aggree with Whiteknight. There's so much more here. Stress from her everyday life, problems back home maybe, and with her loosing the money, was all she could take.It must of been a large amount of money.
Makes me believe that what ever awaited her back home, she wasn't ready, or going to deal with it any longer.

Yep - there's a lot more to the story somewhere. Depression is a terrible thing - been there, done that. I do feel for the family though - what a thing to happen. Jen

Very sorry to hear that also, it's sad how depression can make situations that can be fixed, hopeless....very, very sorry for that poor woman and her family....

Chris,
Is this a true story? If it is, this is terrible. If anyone can be depressed on a cruise what would they be like on land? The poor lady must have had serous issues.

Most of the people that actually perform this last act of "release" have little idea of how it affects the ones they leave behind.

My cousin committed suicide last Sunday night. A wonderful person just overloaded with tons of personal and legal problems. A very good person just finally saying "I've had enough". I'll miss him.

The unrealistic guilt and torment this is putting his 3 sons and ex-wife through, not to mention his 93 year-old Mother, is unbelievable. I grieve for all of them.
