Booked a last minute cruise on Holiday out of Mobile, AL because the price was right and we did not have to fly or drive very far to get to the port. We've cruised on HAL and RCCL in the past and I'm a bit concerned over some of the negative reviews that we've seen. My philosophy is "even the worst cruise is better than no cruise." Any comments?
It's great for a short cruise. Small ship, attentive crew. Rehabbed in December of last year. There are white duvet covers on the beds instead of the yucky orange spreads. All the usual Carnival fun and games.
Went January of this year out of NOLA. Will probably go January of this year as we are only an hours drive from the port of Mobile.
Just got off the Holiday last week and had a great time. Food was good, service was good and we had a good time. It's a smaller ship than the rest of the fleet which limited some of the amenities but if you give me a ship, a casino, a restaurant and a bar I can have a good cruise regardless.
I also will be crusin on Holiday 10-21-04 & I am glad to hear the good reviews. My mom's TA will be going on board today to check the ship out. Am very anxious to hear what she has to say. Be sure & let you know.
These posts are a relief to read!!! I, too, have read so much negative about the Holiday, I was starting to get concerned. We plan on having a good time, this will be our 4th cruise, but we elect not to stay in certain hotels because they are not well-kept and the same, for us, would apply to a cruise ship. My fears are easing. Thanks.
look at it this way...Carnival is "testing" the cruise market potential out of Mobile (which I think will be great), so they are going to put their best foot forward and I think cruisers will be in a very positive upbeat mood because they appreciate the fact that Carnival is trying to support the community..I cruised on the Holiday when it was brand new and had a great time..sometimes veteren cruisers on this board will cruise a newer more "bells and whistles" ships (i.e. the conquest out of N.O.) and then compare it to an older ship (Holiday) which is not fair...You'll love the ship, you'll love the cruise..have a great time
I agree with you I believe they will really try to impress. If this works out, the Mobile port will be great. In such a good location where cruisers will not have to travel as far. I know I am glad we were scheduled out of New Orleans last month & Ivan canceled us but we will be on same cruise out of Mobile which is closer to me.
I just got off a "bells and whisles" ship 2 weeks ago. The Conquest out of New Orleans. I've also been on the Holiday. To be honest I loved the Holiday and liked the Conquest. I'm not a fan of huge ships. I keep trying but I am always drawn back to the smaller more intimate ships. The Holiday is small and older and just plain fun. You know you are on a ship. The Conquest, altho it had more to offer, it was like a floating resort. You'll have great food and entertainment on either ship. So go and have a great time. I wish I was going with you.
for some reason that I can't explain, I have the sense that the crew on the older smaller ships WANT to be on the older ship, go out of their way (it helps there are not as many people) to please because they know it might not have the latest innovations (i.e. movies under the stars, "pc" dining, extensive spas)...it's almost a "back to basics " cruising (good food, good service, lots of R&R)
I saw the new Mobile terminal on the Mobile news channel tonight. It is beautiful. Brand new, Port Authority wants this to work. Carnival only gave Mobile a one year commitment. Hope the Holiday continues to sell out!
I just got off the Holiday this morning, the rooms looked great, love the new spreads, a/c works too well, rooms attendants were everywhere, food was great in the buffet, and in the main dining room. I was not that happy with the Shout show, but then all they need to do is update that, the ship looks good.
