Default Woman Overboard

What is it about all the bad news from Carnival ships this month...could it be people not able to cope with the holidays?

I read that too, about a 37yr old woman missing from the Carnival Pride. Very suspicious, was it foul play or ????

What a way to end a cruise..........

I suppose that's one way of getting away without tipping your cabin steward.

Or to get away from her bar bill.
Mine was $450.00. I felt like jumping.

Oh what the heck, you only live once. My DH & I walked away owing $1,200.
Life is so short - we like to enjoy it.

Mrs. B and I were married on the Pride. 'Twas a delightful ceremony.. complete as only Carnival can do it with all the glorious trimmings.
Then came the wedding pics and of course we had to have most all of them as they were very good.
Jumping overboard sounded like a fairly good option at that point.
Glad we didn't however because we travel to Galveston for Xmas on the Ecstasy in 16 days. YaY!

Pretty darn cold of some of you making light of someone who has probably died. How would you feel if it were your wife, daughter, etc and you came to these boards for information and saw posts such as those that you have made? Don't say that it won't happen as we have had a couple of folks who have lost people on cruises either through unexpected death or falling overboard etc, come here to talk. Think before you post. I am not trying to be politically correct by any means, but that's just wrong.

Tell you what folks, from now on I am deleting any posts that try to make light of these situations or make it into a joke. It isn't funny at all when people die. This does not mean it cannot be discussed or inquires made, just that posts by those that think it's something to joke about will be deleted.

The latest. One might speculate, due to the fact that the woman's belongings were scattered, tyhat there was a struggle.

I think it's a shame that any life is lost whether it's in a car wreck, shipboard accident or whatever. I would like to say that a couple of posts appeared to me to infer that there was something wrong with or about Carnival.
I would like to respectively remind folks that it happens to other lines too. RCCL, Celebrity, NCL have all had people over the side. I do agree that 2-3 in a few weeks is odd but I hardly think that Carnival has some sort of conspiracy going with the aim of dumping someone overboard every couple of weeks. Carnival has more ships than anyone else and carries more passengers than anyone else so that may have some bearing.
The guy who climbs up on his roof and falls off and kills himself doesn't rate any national news headlines. The person who jumps or falls off a ship, for some reason, does.
Several hundred thousand people cruised this past year. How many went overboard?
I live in a city of 270,000 people. On a regular basis someone is killed in an auto accident. It makes the local news on the date it happens and thats it. No CNN, no ABC, no NBC reports on it. But if something happens on a ship, look out.

Half a dozen schools in the state can be closed due to the flu and it's hardly mentioned except locally. A dozen people out of 2000 on a ship can get sick and it's automatically called the "Norwalk virus ". Go figure.

It seems that with these shipboard incidents when the dust settles, in many cases there was alcohol involved and someone was doing something they shouldn't have been doing, like hanging over the rail, trying to climb on the lifeboats, etc.
I have cruised a couple dozen times on the major lines and have been on military ships. I have yet to see a ship that didn't have rails, handrailings on the steps, etc.
Using common sense wherever you are can make a difference.

I'm going on a 10 dayer in a couple months and falling overboard or having someone throw me overboard is the least of my worries. I'm more likely to get hurt enroute to the airport than I am on the ship. I am not in anyway unsyphathetic to these people and their families. I wish I could ease their pain. But I am not ready to cast doubt or suspicion on the cruise line either.
Most of the ships , or at least the newer ones , have a network of video cams throughout the ship. My guess is that it won't be long until they have every inch of the ship covered so they can know exactly what happened on every day of every cruise.
That would raise privacy issues with some, I'm sure but would solve the problem of some folks wanting to cast suspicion on the cruise lines when something tragic happened.

Just my opinion which isn't worth anything to anyone but me.

I strongly agree with Jim that it is in very poor taste to joke about passengers overboard or any other such misfortune.

I didn't care for the post either, thought they were making light of someone's misfortune, however, I didn't respond as I thought it would be considered a personal attack against the writers and that would have been against the board's rules.

Karessa, that is common when the family asks as the FBI is the agency that has the best jurisdiction over cases like this and it is not uncommon.

We live in Wisconsin and she was from Wisconsin also. So we have had it on our news all the time. It is such a shame to hear such a thing. I am sure there are things we don't really know. I hope the family hears all of our thoughts and prayers that we send. The cruising community is a close community.

Her poor husband was on GMA on ABC this AM and he's pretty shook up. Looks more and more like foul play.

Thank you Jim for your compasionate action in this matter. I just watched this woman's husband on Good Morning America a few minutes ago. With a lump in his throat and tears streaming down his face, he asked for help from anyone who might have seen something that evening. Joking about these type of accidents not only hurt those who are closely related to the story, but offend those who read them and have lost loved ones lately due to some other means of death. I do enjoy some of the levity on this message board, but definately not on a subject matter like this. Thanks

We were on board the Pride last week when the woman went overboard. I have to say it was pretty devistating for her family, especialy her 16 year old daughter. There has been a lot of talk in the news about foul play and I have to agree after hearing some accounts from people who talked to family members of those involved. We did see them take someone off the ship in handcuffs shortly after docking. Was it related, who knows?

I just cant describe the sick feeling in my stomach every time I would hear them announce this womans name, asking her to call the pursers desk, knowing she had probably went overboard.

I saw the husband on GMA also. I could not help but hurt for that family. A cruise is supposed to be fun. How tragic that this had to happen to them.

That is quite unusual to have that kind of frequency with this type of thing. Of course, it's not unusual to see copy-cat occurrences when things of this nature are publicized. People who are depressed and want to end it all, see the news accounts and the idea is planted in their head. As for the persons personal belongings being scattered, that would create an atmosphere of suspicion so as not to void any insurance polices. Now, I'm not saying that's the case here, but it is a likely possibility. If all the occurrences took place on the same ship, then it would look more sinister, like foul play. Anything is possible.

Here is a link to the latest on this one.

http://www.gmtoday.com/news/local_st...2072004_02.asp

This links you to a page "Events at Sea" You can see 2004, 2003 and 2002. I was surprised by the number of people gone overboard, sexual assaults by crew on minor pax and drug busts.

Melanie did you know at the time the women was missing. Did they have a massive search of the cruise ship at the time? Did they check all the cabins right away? I was just wondering. I would hope they would have searched the whole ship. I have been on a few cruises and I have never heard of something like this on our ships. We live in Wisconsin real close to where she is from and it is all over our news. I feel so bad for her family. They just need answers, it just seems like someone must have seen something. Please keep them in your prayers everyone.
