The above sure makes you hope!!!! I haven't ever got up graded outside the category I bought as in Inside guarantee or Oceanview guarantee. (11 Carnival cruises) Sometimes I'm upgraded to the top of the same category but that is usally with a past guest special that allows you to be upgraded to the best available cabin in the category and you have to book early to get the Empress deck... I did get upgraded from a cat 1A bunkbed to a 5A porthole on this cruise on Saturday but that is the special I bought when I booked. It was offered at time of booking - those are the best I've ever gotten otherwise it is about 2 levels up on the guarantee cabins. I don't consider them upgrades when you get them at time of booking though because that is why I'm booking it to get the higher level. Debbie
I booked a specific room (instead of a guarantee because I had an Entertainment coupon which can only be used on a 6A or above), but my Carnival PVP put in my record that I requested an upgrade. Is there something else he might put to up my chances of getting upgraded?
Those of you who have been upgraded on Carnival, did you cruise on a full or almost full ship, or at a down time? We are cruising Easter week. My PVP said that the Oceanview guarantees could then be booked in our room so they might upgrade us.
Any specifics that would upgrade my changes of being upgraded would be appreciated! I wanted to book a balcony, but the cost for 5 of us was too much!
I think the upgrades here were all booked as gurantee's, meaning we booked a minimum category that we would be happy to get, but allowed the cruise line to assign the cabin. You are at the very least assigned to a cabin in the category you booked, but may get an upgrade when the room is assigned.
I have no idea how CCL chooses these rooms. I have seen many theories, but it really appears to be random, luck of the draw, etc..

Carnival Triumph -- i was upgraded from 4A INSIDE cabin to...... 8D Balcony
cabin. And not only was it a great upgrade......I did NOT book a GTY cabin.
I actually picked a cabin on the Riviera Deck and thanks to a great online TA ( Cruise411.com) I got a wonderful upgrade to the Lido Deck.
I am thinking that it was actually due to
repeat business with the same online agency......but who knows.
good luck with all the wonderful upgrades ----- I am hoping for the upgrade fairy on
my next cruise.....but I booked 8A GTY just in case......
My first cruise we were upgraded from GTY 6a to a Balcony on the Empress Deck, our 2nd cruise was upgraded from Gty 8a to Cat 11 suite> ..Can't wait for my next cruise..we booked a Gty 8a again. I'll be thrilled if we get a comparable upgrade again.
The best upgrade we've ever gotten (which will probably never happen again in our lifetime!) was from 6D to a Catagory 12, suite w/private balcony. And not just one cabin, bu TWO! We had prev booked two, with our son & his friend in the next one. We were totally jazzed, as you can imagine!
Lucky kids, we couldn't afford to go on a cruise when I was 17, much less have my own suite! haha This was on the Carnival Paradise, God rest her previously sweet air atmosphere...

Our last cruise - from a 6A to a 8A. Booking an oceanview and getting upgraded to a balcony was WONDERFUL. Although now I'm hooked on a balcony....

We booked an Inside Quad Guarantee about 9 months in advance(?a 4A)and were absolutely thrilled to be upgraded to 6E(highest level OceanView with floor-ceiling window). It was on the Spa Deck cabin 1104 near the front of the ship (which some people may feel more movement than midship/lower deck).
Thank-you Magical Upgrade Fairy!!! We(2 adults, 2 kids) loved our room!!!! How will we ever survive a plain old Inside now??!!

VALOR Jan/05-our first family cruise was great!
Well there's always hope for us--We booked GTY BL. Hopefully that doesn't mean we'll end up over the disco or all night lounges (BG) with our luck who knows?? i'll just remember to bring ear plugs or cotton and be happy with whatever we get! it's our first cruise and we'll be celebrating 20th anniver.--we go in Aug 7 on conquest
We've veen upgraded twice, both on the Conquest. Booked IS Gty, and got OV once, and Family cabin on Spa deck (whoee) once. The Spa deck is a mixed blessing. The room is large, with floor to ceiling windows (basically a balcony with the balcony space inside the cabin), but it is just below the children's pool. Several mornings about daybreak, the staff would unstack the deck chairs, and position them. Whump .... slide. We are early risers, so it didn't bother us enough to complain, but late night partiers should be aware, or maybe if you party hard enough, you won't hear the noises!
