We rented a jeep in St Martin and had no problems at all. Very safe. I think it was ~$40-$50 dollars for the day plus gas. It was a little Suzuki. Fit 2 adults and 2 kids. A little tight for the kids in the back seat, but not unbearable. There are 3 or 4 rental places right at the end of the pier when you dock. You can also haggle/negociate on the price as well. Very easy to get around in the island. Main road basically parallels the circumferance of the island.

In Nassau, we took the water taxi over to Paradise Island. I don't remember the price, but it was very reasonable.

larry, thanks for the info. that helps a great deal. so you would recommend not booking the rental until you get there because there is a better chance for a cheaper price?

Yes, I would definitely wait. My wife loves to haggle and since there were 3 separate companies right next to each other there is some wiggle room in their rates.

good luck and have fun.
