Default snorkeling with a life jacket on???

i was reading that in chankanaab there are allowed no floats. they will rent you life jackets for snorkeling. our grandkids and me i know will want a life jacket. those hold you in an upward position and it would be very difficult to lay flat in the water and look downward. how does that work?

how deep is the water in the snorkeling at chankanaab? also is it advisable to wear some sort of water shoe going in and coming out of the water on those stone steps in the picture? patticake

Definitely wear water shoes. It is rocky. I've snorkeled with a life jacket in deep water and you just float along the surface.

It's not like the Life Jacket you are thinking of really it's more of like water wings but only bigger.

i didnt know they wont allow floats, wonder what they consider a float? my daughters and i use ski belts, we dont put them on, but just drag them along, simply because you just never know what might happen. we wear light rubber bottomed water shoes inside our flippers, i dont like walking on the bottom, you never know what you might step on. works well for us. we snorkled shallow and deep, dont matter to us, just so we are snorkling

One of the guys who works at one of the dive shops was at the steps you go down at the snorkeling area (last time I was there). He told me it's about 30 feet deep just a couple of feet off the bottom step! Also - those steps can be pretty slippery, but there IS a railing to hold on to.

The life VESTS they rent at Chank are not cumbersome, and you lie flat in the water.

The life jackets that we have been given for snorkeling you fill them with just a little air and they work great. you adjust the air for your size. They are flat and kind of like nylon material

the life vest that you rent are flat, you inflate them yourself with air. As much or as little as you like

Can you purchase water shoes on the boat? I am going to try to get a pair at a local store but with it being winter I don't know if I will have any luck. Thanks.

might be pricey, but your local dive shop will have them. the closest one to me is over 50 miles, but it was a part of the trip planning, so we even enjoyed going after the shoes

Thanks Darcy, I will definitely check Walmart. I just wasn't sure if they would have them available this time of year. We are not going till April so they probably would have them then.
