Port Of New Orleans

How hassle free is it to get to the Terminal from the French Quarter? We are spending the night before in the city. Where do we get dropped off at? Is there a seperate location to drop off our bags? I'm a little confused as you can see.

Re: Port Of New Orleans

You'll need to take a taxi......I believe it's a fixed rate of $7 per person. There's a lot of construction going on there and people have been taking quite a while to get through the traffic, especially those wishing to board the ship early (because of the back-up of the people just getting on the ship). I've heard, traffic-wise, it's a lot better late morning, early afternoon. I've also heard, from a couple of people, that because there was traffic, their taxi dropped them off 1 long block away and they had to drag their luggage........do not get out of the taxi until you are at the port (unless it's your choice). You will know when you are there as you will see the luggage porters and the ship. The port of New Orleans has a website that has additional information if you need it.

Re: Port Of New Orleans

I was just there a couple of weeks ago, we had to drop off our luggage on a side street where the porters put them into trucks, then we had to drive around the corner and park on the 5th level or above of a parking garage ($12 a day) and then go out of the parking garage and board a bus (where there was this little kid just screaming and yelling the entire way) to get to the terminal. I didn't even really SEE where they were WORKING on actual construction, but it was a mess, we stayed at the La Quinta downtown, the night before, one block down and one block over from Burboun street, so we didn't have a problem with walking :)

If you can drop your bags off early (mid-a.m.) you can walk to the pier from the parking lots.
All in all, not the best experience.

Tim,

I'm from New Orleans, here is a good place to look. You can take the Streetcar (trolley)
from the Quarter or at least very close to it all the way to the Cruise terminal. the route is riverfront 2. Enjoy the city. http://www.regionaltransit.org/route...systemmap2.jpg

Thank you all for your advice and tips. less than a week away. Looking forward to the French Quarter stay and then.....THE CRUISE!

Does anyone have any favorite places to eat / drink in the French Quarter? Any suggestions are welcomed

Tim - I'll be cruising the Conquest a couple weeks after you. We're staying a few days in NOLA after. I've done a lot of research on TripAdvisor.com on restaurants. The user reviews are fantastic. We plan on eating brunch at Emeril's Delmonico despite the reviews of really snotty waiters, dinner at Cobalt (we're staying at Hotel Monaco, so it will be convenient), dinner at Brigtsen's (only heard GREAT things... make reservations NOW) and you gotta have a muffaletta from Central Grocery. Other places we hope to try are: Galatoire's, Camellia Grill and NOLA (another Emeril's restaurant). Plus beignets at Cafe du Monde.

MichiganTim,

Are you on the Conquest on 4/3? If so, my sister and I are too. We are very excited!! First time to Jamaica. Been to Grand Cayman and Cozumel a couple of years ago. We loved Carlos N Charlies in Cozumel and plan to go there again. Hope you have fun! We intend to.

I won't be getting on Conquest, but I'll be there to watch her sail. I'll wave at you as you make your way to the Crescent. I'll sail the following the day (4/4). Bon Voyage!

Re: Port Of New Orleans

Kevin, The River Walk Mall is between the French Quarters and the terminal right? Does the street car drop you off in walking distance to the terminal (with luggage)? We were there a couple of years ago and saw the Carnival Holiday right in front of the River Walk but I never did see the terminal. The Conquest was sailing out of Gulf Port on that trip. We missed the terminal all together.

Re: Port Of New Orleans

When we got on the Conquest in Jan, the last streetcar stop on the riverfront was at the Riverwalk parking lot. It's about a little over a quarter mile to the end of the Riverwalk building. (Where the Cruise terminal is located). I don't know how you pack, but I would've needed CPR if I'd toted all our stuff down there.

Re: Port Of New Orleans

Not sure about the exact stops as I have not taken this streetcar. I did a search on Yahoo for NEW ORLEANS RTA (Regional Transit Authority) They have a detailed map.
I Hope it works for ya.

Re: Port Of New Orleans

I just love this website, everyone is so helpful with so much useful information! Looking over the RTA map, I would have to transfer I think. My hotel is on Bourbon Street (Royal Sonesta), so I hope the cab fare wont be too much and be taken for a ride!

Anyone cruising with me on the Sensation?

Restaurant suggestion-Mike Anderson's! Excellent seafood, great drinks and some of the best cheesecake I have ever eaten (and I have consumed a lot of cheesecake). Prices are very reasonable, large portions also. It is not super fancy, but great. They have a website.

Re: Port Of New Orleans

Thanks Turkeyman. CPR huh? That's funny. We will be with an older couple on their first cruise so maybe I won't put them through the torture of walking. Although the old guy did say he brought me a lead lined life jacket from Los Angeles. Hmm . . I"ll have to think about this! LOL

Re: Port Of New Orleans

UUUUGGGHHH Tim don't look now but it says on your last post that your ship has sailed...which means you missed it...HA HA

I believe our group is ready! We are all just getting plain silly now so I think it's time we get this show on the road! 4 days left!

Have a great time in New Orleans. I'll be thinking of you and Paula on Wednesday as I'm packing my last few things and delivering my children to their vacation destinations!

We need to decide where we are meeting at? (Surely we can't go on this cruise after meeting here at cruisemates.com and talking via computer and not meet in person?)

HAPPY SAILING!
Becky
