Default Pictures - Copyrighted???

Can we make copies of the pix from the ship? I asked if they had a copyright release when I was there and they had no clue what I was talking about. I've searched the web page and can't find anything. I'd really like to get some copies made of some of the pix that were taken.

Thanks for your help.

IMHO - you purchased the pictures, they're yours to make copies for yourself (not for sale). Copyrighted photos will have the "c" somewhere on them. I don't think you'll need to worry about it.

I took my to Sam's club, scaned them and made copies, no problem. It's do-it-yourself service.

I think it depends on where you make copies. The pictures are copyrighted (there is a copyright at the very bottom of the pictures we purchased). Some places check for that, others don't.

Copied mine, but first cut the white strip off the bottom. Some places say nothing, others do.

I personally think the pictures are good but too high. If they came down, they might sell more quantity instead of seeing so many tossed as I do most of mine.

I think $20 for one 8X10 is sort of steep when they are $4.00 at Walmart. I think even at $8.00 they would still make a proffit.

I read on another board that if you call Carnival Customer Service and request a photo release so you can reproduce your cruise pictures, they'll gladly send you one. Hope that helps.

A company can get stuck with a huge fine for reproducing copyrighted materials, even if you use the 'do it yourself' machines. Some photo paper will have copyright stamped all over the back of the pic. I had a drug store that would not let me make copies of a pic (it didn't say copyrighted anywhere) on their machine because it 'looked' professional. I have had a machine detect the copyright in the paper & wouldn't let me print it. Most will let you do pics if they are 'old' but legally you need a release from the company. For all the people that are 'by the cruise line rules' (such as formal night, shorts in dining room etc) you are breaking the law producing copyrighted pics without a release )

CherieB.......that's how they are around here. Even though it's "do it yourself" they hover over you. I found out when I tried to make a copy of my son's school photo; doesn't have a copyright, but "looks professional". I have also heard the Carnival will send you a photo release but have never needed it. I buy 1 or 2 formal night 8X10's and 4 wallets to hand out to the grandparents. I also buy the coming aboard photo and, at least, one port photo. That's more than enough for us, as we take lots of our own pictures. The picutres on Carnival are probably so expensive because they print so many and have to toss most of them! I thought I had heard that they were going to start having kiosks, where you could pick out the pictures you wanted printed, but I haven't heard of that since.

Haven't tried with Carnival, but we wanted to use our formal night picture as our Christmas card one year. Ritz Photo wouldn't make the cards without a release. Call customer service at Royal Caribbean and they faxed one to me.

I work at Walgreens and the photo guy is always coming back to the pharmacy asking if a photo release form has been faxed to us yet. (the fax is only in the pharmacy) Normally the employee in photo will call the company that produced the photo for the customer so long as you give him or her the company's phone number.

I copied mine on my scanner at home and they came out fine. Made all the copies I wanted.

By coping your cruise photos you are not breaking any laws. when you copy the photos at walmart you aren't breaking the law, walmart is breaking the law. Photo centers have been sued by photographers for breaking copyright laws.

Some people will let you take the pictures with no problem, but remember they are breaking the law and that means if you come back and try to get more pictures the next person might not let you take the pictures.

If you have something that is copyrighted just print it at home, as long as you do make money off them than your not breaking the law.

Interesting that this thread resurfaced. I remember our last cruise included text in the Fun Times regarding photo release. I think it referenced a URL though I couldn't find in in a quick search of Carnival's site.

Places like Walgreen's require a release just as a means to protect themselves, period.

According to my very good friend who is a professional photographer, if you had a picture taken of you on a ship and bought the picture, it is yours to use without infringing on any copyright laws as long as you are not reproducing it for commercial purposes. According to the United States Fair Use Doctrine, you have the right to use that photo for your own purpose. This is why online companies will accept a digital picture and make it bigger or put it on canvas, etc, as long as you stipulate that you are not doing so for commercial gain unless you have the copyright on the original picture. The only exception to this is if the photographer stamped on the back of the picture that it is copyrighted and cannot be reproduced in any manner for any reason without specific written permission. But he said in today's electronic environment, it is widely accepted that you may scan the picture and reproduce it on your facebook page, website, etc. or make a copy for personal use as long as you're not selling it.

Default Pictures - Copyrighted???

I wrote or called, I think I called, Carnival about this several years ago. They sent me a written permission to copy my pictures. It was not dated and I've taken very good care of it, so I'm able to copy any and all of my pictures over the years. My letter is on file at Walgreens and I have no problem at all. It was worth the few minutes it took to call and I recieved the letter in a few days.

We had a group of 12 of us that went on a cruise one time. We had a photo taken of all of us, which turned out fantastic. We decided to purchase only one and make copies. We went to a local Walgreens and they wouldn't make copies saying the picture was copyrighted. Nowhere on the picture did it say that but they insisted (we honestly didn't know anything about this).
We went to a local Kinkos, which turned out to be cheaper, and all 6 couples are the proud owners of a fantastic picture and great cruise memories.
Now this was 10+ years ago so who knows what the norm is now?

You can email carnival customer service on Carnival.com/contact and they will email you a reply with permission. I have done it several times and always got a positive reply. Just takes a while. That way everyone stays out of trouble.

We usually buy one of each photo we like. Scan copies in different sizes at home and print them on photo paper from Costco (great prices). In this digital age, I never have to use outside photo services.
