Default passport confusion/Belize

I was looking on the U.S. Dept. of State website to look at the travel warnings and then I noticed under the foreign entry requirements it says you need a passport to get into Belize. I am so confused now, does this rule not apply to passengers on cruise ships or something? My travel agent said I do not need a passport, we are cruising this summer. Should I call Carnival?

the requirements are changing rapidly. If the government web site states that you need a passport then you need a passport. Wait time for a passport is averaging 4-6 weeks, you may need to do express processing to ensure that you get yours in time.

We are sailing on the Valor this weekend with a stop in Belize and my TA called Carnival to check passport requirements in Belize, you do not need a passport to visit Belize from a cruise ship. If you were flying into the country, you would need a passport.

rosetattoo,

Thanks, thats what I was thinking but wasn't sure. I have heard from other people something about only needing one if you will be there over 24 hrs. Who knows, I may call Carnival just to double check before we go.

BE CAREFUL!! Do NOT miss the boat if you do not have a passport - nightmare!! You are there illegally once that ship leaves so be sure to be back on board with plenty of time before sailing - or do a ship's tour - probably the best thing to do right now in Belize.. Debbie

We have already booked a ship tour at this port so I don't have to worry about missing the ship. I have read some horror stories about people missing the ship and not having their passports. That is why we decided on a ship tour.

Belize has a special exemption for those that arrive and only spend one day in port. If you try to go to Belize in any other way, you will need a passport. The biggest problem is if you have a problem in Belize and have to leave by air or land. I am not sure how that would work as a passport is required so you would probably need special permission and an escort if that happens. If you have time, get your passport as it will be needed next year.
