Default Jumpers on Destiny

This was just posted on the G/L board and did not see it elsewhere.

Thanks to Chris for teh info.

Harry

Apparently, 2 people decided to commit suicide and jump overboard the Destiny late Thursday nite 5/12. They were last seen on the ship at 8:30 PM, and since it was a day at sea, there was no other way off the boat than jumping.

Carnival did an extensive search on the ship all Thurs nite/early Fri. morning including each and every cabin...with no luck. The couple were never found and presumed dead.

The Coast Guard had us circling for hours, Friday morning, the area where they were suspected of jumping the previous night, and finally released the ship around 3pm. Too late to head on to Aruba, so they announced we were heading to St Maarten Sat. instead. Big whoop...I really really was looking forward to Aruba!!

Dave, I was thinking the same -- it always seems to be Carnival. Maybe they fly off the slide.

We had a small article in our Chicago Tribune today about the couple, that was the first I'd heard of that.

Here is the article:

AROUND THE WORLD
Missing pair likely fell off cruise ship

Items compiled from Tribune news services
Published May 17, 2005

THE CARIBBEAN -- An American couple that disappeared during a Caribbean cruise probably fell overboard, officials in Puerto Rico said Monday.

The 71-year-old man and 67-year-old woman aboard the Carnival Destiny disappeared Thursday between the islands of Barbados and Aruba, said U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Omar Barrera.

"The only logical conclusion it that they somehow fell overboard," Barrera said.

Investigators found a few belongings, including a purse and sandals, out in the open on the third floor of the ship. There were no signs of suicide, and the two evidently were in good health with no serious personal problems.

Two Coast Guard planes conducted an unsuccessful search. Passing ships were asked to be on the lookout.

Ya.. like the girl who disappeared from the Rhapsody two years back. Carnival must have secretly owned that ship too.

Mr Martin, I am so sorry to hear to about your missed port of Aruba. I feel that maybe Carnival should give you something for the mess they made of your cruise. The least they could do is give you 1/2 of your fare back and a 1/2 off on your next cruise. Maybe you could sue the coast guard for forcing the ship to circle for hours in a vain attempt at finding some sort of body alive or dead. How dare they impose on your vacation and that of your fellow passengers. I am surprised that there was not a large meeting and demands made upon the captain to contiune on and forget the search. After all who wants to go to St Martin when Aruba is the destination of choice. I agree with you....Big Whoop.

Ok this person sounds like the ring leader of the Glory debacle. Please lets not go down that road again!!! Also does this person have any respect for life? What a nerve, what if he/she was the one overboard?

This is all I am saying. I have held back on saying things on here regarding stuff like this, but I have had enough!!!

I can't imagine anyway you could "fall" off a cruise ship!! What a selfish thing to do to all those aboard!!! Maybe the husband got tired of his wife and threw her off and then jumped!!! OR vise versa......but they did not fall. Sorry that the innocent people on the ship had to suffer for this selfish act.

Let's get a grip folks, Harry is on staff here and is not on the ship, he is just relating what was reported to him by another cruiser. I can tell you that Harry is a very sensitive guy and has the utmost respect for people, much less their lifves.

I hope they not only find these two people but they also find out exactly what happened to them. Nothing is worse for a family than not knowing what happened to a loved one. My deepest sympathies go out to the family. :o(

Rachel.....you should never ASSUME anything! Stranger things have happened ! I know that one time late at night on The Elation out in the middle of the Gulf Of Mexico I was on the aft part of the ship looking out over the back and a gust of wind came that pushed me up to the edge of the railing. I am 210 lbs and I actually had to fight to stay on my two feet. You just never know!

Hello everyone,

I was the person Harry shared the info from with his original post here. I am the one who was upset for having my itinerary changed from Aruba to St. Maartin because of those selfish jumpers. <"Fell off" is Carnival's story?!" GMAB!...they obviously jumped...2 people don't just happen to fall off a ship....and together no less.>

I'm also surprised this story isn't getting all that much attention. Makes me think Carnival is doing all they can to keep it from being widely known. Hmm, are they trying to protect their "Fun Ship" image? I guess suicides aboard would certainly put an ironic spin on that marketing campaign.

Anyhoo, he main reason for going on this Southern Carribean cruise was to go to Aruba and i'm quite upset that I didn't get what I paid for from Carnival. Suicides or not....i'm still writing a letter to them requesting some kind of compensation. I really couldn't care less if 2 people decided to end their lives....I myself want to live and enjoy a vacation I paid hard earned money for. So did about 2,000 others on that ship i'm sure.

To choose to jump off a ship with so many others aboard is not only stupid, it's selfish. They didn't care or realize that their actions would be affecting so many other people around them. AND, on top of that, they had children back in their cabin waiting for them, who were the ones who reported them missing. How cruel can you be?!

I mean, if you want to off yourself, please do it alone and in a dark cave....and not on a Carnival Cruise please. Others are there to have fun...not kill themselves.

Oh well, ONE of these days i'm sure i'll get to see Aruba lol.

Chris

Chris330r,

Please in name of what you hold holy, tell me why Carnival owes you a damn cent? It was not their fault that 2 people decided to kill themselves. Maybe you should sue the family of the dead people. It is they and not Carnival that caused the change of plans. All Carnival did was what it was told to do by maritime laws and human kindness and an act of compassion. Maybe there was a thin hope of finding them floating in life jackets, at least they looked. What if and it could still turn out to be a total accident, what if it where your parents or a loved one. What then? Oh well 2000 passengers want to get on with their lives, sorry mom ,dad, son ,daughter ,maybe someone will find you. I think not. I for one hope that Carnival tells you to go sue the family and to get on with your life. Good luck and be careful it is a long way to the water below.

Chris, I can understand being upset because you didn't get to go to Aruba. However, since human beings are all people of free will and are only in control of themselves, how is it you feel that Carnival is responsible for the subsequent events after they jumped or fell whichever happened? If they did in fact jump, what should we do have the cruiselines administer psych evals before each person boards the ship? I can see it now, everyone will have to arrive the day before boarding to take their three hour psych eval and then wait for the results to see if they need any further testing before they can take their relaxing vaction that they are then going to really need after taking the eval. I am sure if by chance you did fall overboard you would want and even expect the captian of the ship to look for you. I doubt you would care how much it inconvienced the other passengers. If you had a loved one that happened to jump off of the ship, I would imagine you would want the cruiseline to try to save them as well. However,. I do not comprehend how it is you could know for a fact if these people jumped or fell in, or were pushed in, unless of course you have some personal knowledge, which you need to not only share with the families of these people but also the authorities as well. But, to expect a cruiseline to be responsible for the actions of people while on board is absurd. The only way to do that is to violate the passengers, human rights, which would never fly. Besides I am sure you would not want to provide any tour company with a psych eval on yourself before traveling with them.

Maybe the woman fell or one of them fell and the other thought they could save the other? That's the only explanation I can think of. I feel for their family. So sad.

Chris--I'm not going to debate whether or not you should be compensated for the missed port. However, you yourself stated that the Carnival captain is responsible for the SAFETY of his passengers. Isn't that why he went back to look for these two people? In hopes of finding them or at least their bodies. No one knows what happened. But if it was a double suicide, the family is left with many unanswered questions. I don't know you but I can not believe that you are such a hard, cold, heartless person that you do not have sympathy for the family of this couple. I will also assume that you have never know anyone that has commited suicide. If you have known someone, were they a loser and selfish? A friend of my 20 year old son just recently committed suicide. I, unlike you, would not call this kid a loser or a selfish person. Depression is a complicated medical condition that is very hard for people to understand. I hope you never have to deal with a situation like this in your lifetime. Believe me, it is not easy. Especially for those left behind. :o(

Thanks for listening to me ramble even if you don't agree. I don't want to start a debate but like you I needed to vent.

Have a great night.

Chris,

First off, how would you feel if that was your mom and dad, would you want the capt to just saw Screw them, lets go to Aruba? I think not.

Second, If you should by some strange reason you get a credit, why don't you donate it to your local sucide prevention hotline so maybe someone else won't have to endure this.

Third, did you have trip insurance? IF so maybe you can get something out of them.

Finally, in the words of my friends, get over it, whats in the past is in the past and we can not change it. Besides this will give you something to look forward to on your next cruise (unless of course this turned you off to cruising)

Hey I think Ford and Chevy owe me some money for the missed dates because the cars they made broke down on me. I also belive Miller Lite and Budwiser may have to cough up some because they made sick and had to miss some work.

I think some of you are missing the point. This couple chose to bring 2000+ people into their own troubled world by jumping off the ship (assuming its suicide). I too would be outraged by that. Missing my port would be upsetting enough, but being sucked into the lives of these two people who intentionally put everyone on that ship in such a terrible place is extremely selfish.

When most people committ suicide, its a private event. Tragic as it is, its not done with an audience.

Tink63--while I agree that this couple did bring 2000+ people into their troubled world, that is part of depression that makes it so difficult to understand. People who are severly depressed only think of a way out, they don't think about the consequences or those around them. I would consider this to be selfish if it was an act from a "normal"* person but not from someone who is confused and withdrawn from reality. Depression is a very difficult thing for someone to go through. I myself have never been that depressed and hope I never am. But I know and have known people who are and it is not pleasant. Reality is something they have lost contact with.

I am sorry for those who missed out on the cruise they payed for but this family will be missing out on alot more, their parents/grandparents/aunt/uncle/sister/brother etc.

*when I say normal it is not with any malice intent to those who suffer from any type of depression or medical condition. Just wanted to clarify this.
