Default Carnival's bad rep-fact or fiction?

We are scheduled for our for our very first cruise on the Triumph in Feb 06. This is extra special to my fiance and I because we will be having an on-island wedding at one of the stops. To our surprise, 10 and maybe even more of our friends and family have decided to book as well just to be part of this special occasion!

I have been reading reviews and different websites and find that more than half of them are all negative towards Carnival.
I am so nervous! I could handle a bad experience on a cruise if I had to, but I don't want our friends and family to be dissapointed.

Help!
Any advice?

You'll enjoy. Part of the reason you read more negative reviews is due to the fact more people sail on Carnival. Have to keep in mind two things....the percentage of persons with negative experiences may be as low [or maybe lower] than other smaller cruise lines.

Let's say CCL has 100 "negative reviews"....while "cruise line X" has 10. Carnival sounds worse....until you add CCL has 200,000 pax each year [I just chose a number]. And"cruise line X" has 10000. Using percentages, "X" is twice as likely to have "unhappy campers".

Also, keep in mind that people who are angry about something are much more likely to post than people who are happy/neutral about something.

People who had a bad time are fast to get on the boards and report it. They seem to take great glee in letting everyone know how horrible their trip was. If the cruise meets expectations then there's nothing to report. I'm guilty of this. Been on 4 cruises with Carnival in the last 2 years. We don't go to a lot of shows or join in on the bingo or games. We relax in an out of the way spot away from the pool so never have a problem getting a lounge chair. We enjoy the food in the dining room. Contribute money in the casino. Sometimes we don't get off the ship on port days. We have always had great service from waiters and stewards. Maybe our expectations aren't as high as others but we have a great time relaxing.

We went on our first cruise June 9th on the Celebration from Jax and had a wonderful time.
After all the bad reviews I read about the ship I was wondering if it was going to be a good cruise or not.
But later some some news kept popping up, so we kept an open mind and good attitude that we were going to have a nice vacation
And man did we!! It was wonderful, the food was good, some of the shows were great and the staff and crew were outstanding.
So don't let something you read get you worrying about this cruise and ruin a beautiful wedding.
Keep and open mind, those dreams alive and its going to wonderful if you want it to be.
It was a wonderful experience for us and I'm ready to go again next year with Carnival.
Keep Smiling,
Have a gorgeous wedding and don't worry it will be great!

I agree with SLS.Most people that have a good time don't post a review.People who are angry and want to vent will tell anyone that will listen.I was on the Miracle last summer ,had the vacation of a lifetime and never posted a review. When we were pulling back in to New York I overheard a women saying it was the worst vacation she was ever on.I turned to my wife and said, was she on the same ship as us?I'm going again in 11 days on the Legend and "I will have a great time". I'm sure you will too! Don,t worry be happy!

I have to agree with the others. Last year, before we went on our first cruise on the Inspiration, I read a number of negative remarks about both that particular ship and the cruise line in general. But knowing that everyone is entitled to their opinions - and that often they did not agree with mine - we went expecting a great time. We were NOT disappointed.

Those of us that are content and happy with our choices really are not as vocal as a whole - as those that have complaints. Don't let the negative remarks keep you from having the trip of your life. We're planning our next cruise for next May - and YES, it will be with Carnival.

Have a GREAT cruise and a GREAT wedding.

I, too, had reservations about sailing on Carnival the first time because of all the negative reviews I had read. I decided to go anyway and see for myself what the line was like and I'm glad I did because we had a wonderful time on the Triumph. Some things to keep in mind about reviews are that everyone has different personalities and some people are pickier than others. What one person might find unacceptable another person might not be bothered by it in the least. So take every review your read with a grain of salt. Also, a lot of those complaints are about things which are either beyond the cruiseline's control (ie. the weather) or they are complaints about cruising in general (ie. drinks not being included in the price), which you will find on any ship. Just make sure that you've done your research beforehand and know what to expect and what is and isn't included so there aren't any shocks later. Most importantly, keep an open mind and you should have a great time.

I've sailed 23 times, 5 with Carnival and no complaints. Each cruise line is a bit different than the others but none of always bad and none are always good. Stuff happens so yes, there are bad experiences just as there are good. But some people make their own bad, ya know? and some people are never satisfied.

It's your wedding and you'll be surrounded by friends who are willing to fork out vacation time and bucks to share it with you so how bad could it be???

Blessings on your marriage.

We had a great time on the Conquest in 2003 (Nov.)... Going again on Oct. 30th........ Big ship & took us a couple of days to learn our way around, study your map layouts in advance.... We also got a copy of the ship's activities emailed to us from a previous passenger, it was scanned & emailed to us on a pdf. file that we could open & print.... Although it was from a past cruise the activities are normally the same for each cruise.... Just ask the forum, I am sure someone will help you out as they did us.... Bob & Kathy

We had heard too all the negative complaints but took our first Carnival cruise (after 5 on RCL) in 1997 and have been on 10 more on Carnival since then. LOVE the ship layout and always have a great time. Luane just got back from the Esctasy and she said it right when the people in the alternate dining were complaining that they got wet from rain while in their bathing suits!!! Some people are just not happy unless they complain. I always hear people complain no matter what ship or cruise line I'm on... Just irritating. One couple all they did was complain expecially about the food while on an RCL cruise. They wanted us to change our seating to their table we said no way and when they asked us about it I told them I dont' want to hear all the complaining.. I'm always blunt... Debbie

I will be completing my 4th cruise with Carnival and I have only had one bad experience. It was on the Paradise when it was smoke free. Not alot of people in the bars, and they seemed to close down early. A lot of families, I guess because it was smoke free! All my other cruises with Carnival were exceptional!!

I have been on seven Carnival cruises and loved every one of them. I just booked another cruise for the Glory on 8/13/05. I went on the Glory last April and when I got off people on the bus were saying it was the worst cruise they had ever been on. I loved it. A lot more people complain on on-line forums then give good reviews. You have to take these reviews with a grain of salt. Some peple cannot go on vacation without complaining. As far as I'm concerned Carnival is the best cruise line for the money and I will continue to sail wit them.

Just a word of caution if you're getting married on one of the islands, a couple that were at our dinner table on a cruise on the Victory two years ago were getting married on St. Maarten (their family members were meeting them there) but the Victory ran into some problems and we had to stay in San Juan for two days while they repaired the problem so they cancelled our stop in St. Maarten. The couple were devastated.

Same happened to a couple on our Sovereign cruise 10 years ago - reroute due to hurricane and missed their own wedding!!! Maybe that was a sign! Debbie

First of all, congratulations on your up coming wedding.

As for Carnival. My wife and I just discovered cruising five years ago. We have only sailed Carnival. I have read many, many reviews before each cruise, the good and bad. Then I have learned to put then out of my head. A cruise is what you make it. We have never had a bad cruise in five years. Carnival has always treated us well and I or we highly recommend them. Even my brother and his wife came along with us two years ago their first cruise, and I was very apprehensive about how he would like it. I thought that, that would be his first and last. Next year will be our third cruise together. I think you’ll have a GREAT time. Enjoy your first cruise.

OH and enjoy your wedding too.

for some strange reason there is this "Love-Hate" relationship when it comes to Carnival that nobody seems to understand.
I would recommend you go to the Ship Reviews section on this board and read Anne Campbell's professional review of your particular ship. Her reviews are very informative, and unbiased.

I to hope you have a great time. The marriage part is great, and to have it on a cruise is the best. I think the bad reviews helped me, because i went expecting the worst experence, and spent most of the time, knowing some people were wrong. You can spend your whole trip looking for things that are wrong. It's a cruise. not the land of perfect. I heard so much complaining, I saw how really nuts people can be. What about your wedding on the ship? We had one on ours, and the guest were allowed to attend, and then they got off before we sailed. My kids saw this, and they said it was so good. They are teen boys, so it must have been good. Say to yourself, I WILL HAVE FUN, and you will. Don't eat everything the first day, and take the time to relax and enjoy. (Right Debbie?)

We were on this ship a few years ago and LOVED her. Carnival used to have a bad name but not any longer. You'll have a great time! We honeymooned on Carnival's Celebration!

FACT! I love to cruise, but will never again let Carnival have any of my hard-earned money.

Having just married off my oldest daughter 8 months ago, I know that you want everything to be perfect. My suggestion is to pick a more consistent line. I like Holland America. My daughter & son-in-law did their honeymoon on a Norwegian cruise around Hawaii, & they loved it.

You can't get anymore "consistent" than Carnival. It might not be to your liking, but consistent it is.....

Carnival doesn't sell more berths than any other cruiseline for nothing. They have a fine product and, if it's to your liking, one that many see as superior for the price.

Can something go wrong on your cruise? Of course! How about on another cruiseline? Same. But if you go determined to enjoy yourself, you most likely will.

Carnival was once pretty tacky, with lousy food and lots of drunken passengers. In 1997 they started upgrading all areas of their ships. I think Carnival has the best food in the mid-price range of ships and certainly the largest cabins. They produce their own entertainment and it's much better -- and more diverse -- than you'll find aboard other ships. Today, if I had to pick one ship as giving "biggest bang for the buck" I'd choose Carnival.

You'll have a GREAT time........unfortunately you've just run into people who like to complain for a living. We've cruised Carnival for many years and many cruises and have always had a wonderful time, and you will too!

So glad to hear that so many friends & family members will be able to join you...that's really special!

Also take into mind that when you cruise, you do occasionally need to be flexible, and some people just aren't up for that...

Enjoy, and Happy Nuptials!
