Default Muster Drills. Walk Down All Stairs?

A friend of my husband's, when hearing that we had a room on the Spa Deck, said he felt sorry for us because when it is time for the drill where you get your life jackets, that we have to walk down all the stairs to the bottom area of the ship. Is this correct? (Getting the stairmaster out now if this is true) If it helps, we're on the Victory.

Yes, that could be true, depending on where and what deck your muster station is. In the case of a real emergency, the elevators would not be working, so everyone uses the stairs. Even when not doing the muster drill, we always use stairs, a great way to work off all those calories...When you get to you cabin, there will be a map on the back of the door telling you where your station is, soon after boarding, they will have the mandatory drill.

I have problems with stairs myself because of knees and ankles but it isn't much problem going down stairs. Your muster station is probably on deck 4 or 5 so you won't have to go all the way to the bottom. What you might do is gather your lifejacket a half hour before the drill and take the elevator then to the deck you will have to muster on.

Excellent idea Jim. I actually don't mind the stairs, but some members of my family have some difficulty, although not disabilities. But, I wanted to know so I thought, "someone else will want to know this too", so I asked. On a side note - I posted the same question elsewhere, although, in a tongue in cheek manner I asked "....will there be a waiter serving drinks every 3 - 4 steps? A cabana boy? Anyone?" and got a reply back that these drills are taken seriously and there will be no drinking or smoking allowed. I don't know if someone pee'd in his Cheerios or if he really thought I wanted to know if they would be passing out liquor as you walked down the stairs. Anyway - His answer had us laughing here at home. I'm sure he meant well.

It's hard to tell, on message boards, when someone has their tongue planted in their cheek. I suspect he thought you were seriously asking!

I have trouble with stairs, too. However, I like to know the way just in case. We leave our cabin with our lifejackets about 20 minutes before the drill and walk slowly up or down the stairs. My DH thinks I'm overly cautious, but I also count the doors on the way to the stairs (or to the emergency exit in hotels). Better safe than sorry .

I have seen people with drinks at the drills, but where were those cabana boys

Fern that is actually a very good idea. The emergency lighting on the floors also lets you know where the exits are etc. It is the same way on planes. Always best to know 'just in case' as it could be the one factor that saves your life. As familiar as I am with these procedures from both cruising for fun and 7 years in the US Navy I still take it upon myself to learn the exact routes, my lifeboat and everything else I can even before the drill.

I agree that it's hard to tell on the boards wether someone is kidding or not, and unfortunately, I tend to have a very dry sense of humor. I too like to know as much information as possible which is why it seems like I've read almost everything there is to know about cruising, even before we've gone. As for cabana boys, I'm pretty sure they will be in Costa Maya on the beach, waiting for me since I've wished, and wished, and wished.......
