I know of some staff members with Carnival that told me of a cruise director accepting money from people to promote their stores in the the ports. I will find out the name of this person later tomorrow. I think this is terrible and this person should be caught. We as passengers should not be ripped off!!!
That's a VERY old story. Much older than many people realize.
Shore excursions, and shopping recommendations years ago used to be the major income source for Cruise Directors. That WAS until the cruise lines themselves realized how much money could be made from them.
ALL the "ship's recommended stores" pay a free to the cruiseline to make the "recommended" list ! And it wouldn't surprise me if the "port lecturer/shopping expert or CD (often the same person) still get a cut.
NO need for the stores to "bribe" any single Cruise Director, they simply "bribe" the cruise line.
More Major news----in the past few months several congressmen have been caught up in scandals--- corrupt lobbyists are rampant in D.C. lining the pockets of our corrupt elected officials--- Corrupt CEO's of corporations raiding the company larder leaving employees with empty retirement plans---the Major News is endless--- but an old, old story about a corrupt cruise director on a ship is MAJOR NEWS and we are being ripped off !
Well, it used to be cruise directors did this, about 15 years ago. Now all the cruise lines solicit money from stores to call them "preferred shopping" outlets. It's a huge racket and every cruise line shamefully does it.
Thats why I shop at walmart. I have enough junk in my closets. I do not need anymore junk from an island. Except maybe some guava berry but thats it. Well maybe some rum but that is it. Well then there is the vodka.
It is fairly well known that, especially on the mass market lines like Carnvial, the stores on shore pay for the 'recomendation" by the cruise line. This is actually beneficial to you since the cruise line vets the stores. While there is still a possibility that you may get ripped off, this is less likely with the recommended stores since the cruise line would drop them to avoid the negative word of mouth.
