I am wondering if it is common to have your itinerary changed by the cruise lines. Ours was changed from Cozumel to Costa Maya for our 7 day May cruise. When I called to inquire about this I was told that is was because of damage from the hurricane last year. Has this happened to anyone else, or has anyone been to Cozumel in the recent past???
While not common, it's not totallly "unheard of". My forthcoming cruise also had a change in ports [St. Thomas instead of St. Maarten] after booking. Some ships are still stopping in Cozumel. The storm destroyed the pier itself...so any ships currently stopping there must "tender" passengers.
Be happy that you are going to Costa Maya instead of Cozumel. I was on the Fascination in 2004 to Cozumel, and on the Triumph in November 2005 after the storm. The island looked like a bomb hit it. While the people in that area are working hard on repairs to get them done as soon as possible, now is not the time to visit the island.
In addition it takes much longer than normal to tender to the island, because Carnival is using 800 passenger ferry boats instead of 60 passenger tenders to the island. (Think of the time needed to fill up one of the ferry boats if you are one of the first ones on).

I am sailing on the Miracle May 21st. I have been trying to book excursions for a few days. I called Carnival as none would come up for Cozumel or Costa Maya. In checking this I also noticed that the switched the order of ports with Cozumel, Costa Maya and Belize.
I called my travel agent and they called Carnival and go the answer that contracts for Mexico had not yet been confirmed so I should check back everyday and see if there are any shore excursions posted. I must say, there is one golf excursion listed for Cozumel.
things are so iffy in Cozumel. I can appreciate that the cruise lines wanted to get back into Cozumel asap to help the economy, but i think that they jumped in too soon, the island just isn't read. Expect delays or an itineary change if Cozumel is one of your stops.
We went to Cozumel on Dec. 13 on RCCL Jewel of the Seas. We tendered in via the big ferries. Everything went very smoothly, although the dock was missing some rather large chunks of concrete. We went to Paradise Beach and it was great, although the landscape going out to the beach was pretty much decimated. People in Cozumel are amazingly resilient; you gotta hand it to them and what they have accomplished.
My cruise (liberty sail date 2/26), has also been changed. what I find extremely intersting is that on the carnival website it has cozumel as the port. Most people use the website as a source of information so this is pretty crazy that this huge fortune 500 company cant update their site.
Our cruise on Victory (leaves in 9 days) changed from Cozumel to
Costa Maya back in November. Costa Maya is a nice port, I'm sure
you will find something great to do. One thing is the dock is very very
long and it will take you 10-15 minutes to walk from the ship to the port.
Have a great cruise.
