Hello all~

I've heard that if you place a magnet on the air conditioner in your cabin, it will continue to pump out cool air even if the balcony door is open. I presume without the magnet, the AC senses the open door and shuts off. I was just wondering if it needs to be a special kind of magnet or can I use, say, a refridgerator magnet or something similarly low-tech?

You don't put it on the air conditioner, you put it on the A/C sensor in the door jam. This makes the A/C think the door is still closed, thus it will stay on.

Awww! Didn't know that :) Thank you.

Does it matter if it's a fridge magnet? Or does it have to have to be magnetized on both sides?

I would assume any will do. I heard ppl buying the ones in the gift show for this purpose.

Geee, just think if everyone did that, the AC would run constantly causing breakdowns. then everyone would be without AC. Kind of selfish I think.

While we have never tried doing this ourselves, I doubt it would affect the running of anyones A/C. With most people up by the pools, going to the spa, playing bingo, trivia, ping pong, shuffleboard, line dancing classes, eating in the buffet, etc, I seriously doubt there would be even a handful of ppl who actually do this.

It's been awhile since I've used any AC, being winter and all, but when you put it on (even in your home), don't you leave it running even when you leave? It wouldn't make sense to turn it off everytime you leave the house because it would take quite a bit of time to cool things off again upon your return (creating larger electric usage than if you had left it on). I can see if you leave for days or something, but when I go to work in the summer, I will leave it on low no problem. It's just our preference in our home.

Furthermore, on a cruise, I definitely leave my ac on when we go to the pool, dinner, whatever because of the same reason.

What I was asking about in reference to using a magnet just enables me to continue to have a cool-enough room while also having the balcony open for a bit.

When you think about it, most people probably leave the AC on during most of the cruise, so I extend that AC units in the majority of cabins are running a majority of the time. What difference does it make if my AC runs as well, albeit with the balcony open? I would have had it on anyway.

Lastly, how is any of this selfish?

Wouldn't the room stay cooler if the door to the balcony was shut? What is the purpose of keeping it open when you are on the balcony and letting the cool air escape and making the AC work harder???

This is our first time with a balcony and I have heard that having the door open is rather nice. I suppose it must be one of the functions of having a balcony, having it open for some sea air and sounds :) Otherwise it'd just be a big oceanview window :)

Folks that have mentioned doing this have also given me the idea to bring along a length of bungee cord to keep the door from closing on its own. I plan on doing that as well.

In regard to keeing the AC running with a magnet, have you ever walked into one of those shops in the Carrib. whose door opens 100 times an hour and to keep it even comfortable, the AC must stay running? Well, that is what I want to try. I want to have my door open so I can see if I love one of the benefits of having a balcony AND keep the room in a modicum of coolness.

I know the magnet trick but I think after you do it once or twice you just leave the door shut.

It loses it's novelty rather quickly. At least it did with me.

Take care,

Mike~ I have my suspicsions that this will be the case with me, too :) I really just figured I'd give it a try. This may be the only balcony cabin we have!!

I know some people love the sound of the ocean while sleeping but on my Nature Sounds alarm clock, I love the flute-music more! lol

We'll see......
