Default Carnival Legend vs NCL Spirit

My fiance and I are planning a cruise together and have found what feel to be two rather good deals. Either a 7 night cruise onboard the Carnival Legend or an 8 night cruise onboard the NCL Spirit. The spirirt rate is pretty good, although the more I look into it, their 'freestyle' crusing has some hidden costs. Here are my questions...

NCL has a $10 per day tipping policy...does carnival have this as well?
Is soda free onboard Legend or must a soda card be purchased?
Are meals included, or does every restaraunt have a surcharge?

Overall, which would you go with..a 7 night cruise on carnival for $500, or a 8 night cruise on NCL for $400?

Default NCL vs Carnival

Are the itineraries the same? That would help you decide. As for the tipping, yes, Carnival suggests $10 per day/per person also. Sodas are NOT included on Carnival- you would need to buy the beverage card which runs somewhere between $25 and $30. You can, however, bring sodas on board with you. The beverages included are fruit punch, tea, lemonade.

The iteneraries are basically the same. Both are to places we've never been, so the experiences will all be new.

Meals on board NCL, except buffet, are subject to surcharges? Are they onboard Carnival?

Soda must be purchased seperate onboard Carnival? Must they on NCL?

Is there anything else drastic that is included in the ticket price of one cruiseline that is not included in the price of the other?

Thanks!

All meals on Carnival are included. However, there is a surcharge on the Legend for items purchased in the cafe' (specialty coffee), desserts at the special bakery, and the Supper Club - a very formal restaurant separate from the dining room. I have been on the Legend twice and loved it - the most recent being this past December! It's an awesome ship. The food, service and shows were excellent. If you go, I would pay the extra 30 bucks p/person for the Supper Club - it's an awesome experience with some of the best food I've ever had. If you have additional questions don't hesitate to ask. I personally prefer Carnival over NCL.

The cabins on the Legend are larger. Its also a newer ship.

Hi lumofny,

Yes, most of the mainstream lines now have a $10/pp per day automatic tip. On Carnival you can remove the automatic tip and tip on your own. On NCL you must have a REASON to remove the automatic tip and give them a chance to correct your complaint. If it's not corrected, you can remove the automatic tip.

Meals in the dining room (breakfast, lunch and dinner), the buffet, the hamburger/pizza place and any bars that serve food are all included in the price of your cruise on BOTH lines. The "specialty" restaurants cost extra. Room service is also included, but you should tip the person who delivers a couple of dollars.

If you drink LOTS of soda you can buy a soda "sticker" and get fountain (no cans or bottles) soda at any bar. If you just want one or two a day, it's not worth the price. You can bring a "reasonable" amount of soda onboard. I always take two 6 packs of Diet Coke with me and have had no problem.

Not that I can think of!

NCL offers Freestyle dining, which means you can eat dinner in the dining room anytime you want between (I think) 5:30 and 9:30 PM. Carnival has fixed seating, early and late.

NCL also has Freestyle debarkation. You can eat breakfast and then stay in your cabin until your "color" is called to disembark. On Carnival you have to go to one of the public areas and wait to disembark.

IMO, I'd take the NCL cruise.

Now, I'm just curious, where did you find an eight night cruise for $400.00 pp? The TOS here don't allow you to post that info, but you can email me. Just click on my name!

Hope you and your fiance have a wonderful cruise, no matter which line you decide on!
