same upgrade here for our Legend 4/26/06 cruise. We booked an 8A guarantee and when our docs came, they showed an 8I extended balcony. THis is also our first cruise with Carnival.

First time cruiser here - How do you know when you have been upgraded?

I take it 8-A is not a desirable cabin location. We have been assigned 8-A, an outside balcony for 3 on the Valor.

In case we don't get an upgrade, what are the disadvantages?

8 A cabins are fine, nice just like the photo. I have not yet been in a balcony myself only a 6A outside and a 1A inside. The 1A inside cabin,is like a dark broom closet. 6A just like a balcony cabin except without the balcony, (you have window instead) they are the same size and on a lower deck. Sometimes the letter A B, C etc... just means what deck your on. Sometimes there can be an obstucted view in the case of 7A balcony have a lifeboat in front of them and so do the 5A french door cabins.

While it's a status thing to be on the higher decks noise can be worse, so is the motion of the ship, while the view maybe a bit better. I've always been happy with Rivera deck the lowest as long as I at least have a window. To better understand the cabins read the print brocure from Carnival it will show you what each catagory means. I hope this helps.

Well, I think I'm going with a good attitude, because I'm so excited about everything. I don't think there is any way I'll be disappointed.

A friend had gone on a cruise with a balcony and just loved it, so I decided that would be my first choice when I went on a cruise. She said she watched the sun rise every morning when she was up at 5 a.m., drinking coffee, alone with her thoughts, on the balcony. That kind of sold me!

Do they furnish coffee pots and coffee in your room, or do you have to send for room service? If you send for room service, what is the charge for a pot of coffee, etc.?

You'll be very happy with an 8A. There are no coffee pots in the staterooms as they can be a fire hazard, however room service is free, though I would suggest tipping them a buck or two, depending on your order. You can even pre-order your coffee (and breakfast) the night before and specify the time you would like it delivered, using the order form that you hang on your doorknob. They are usually quite prompt (give or take 10 minutes) and your order can double as a wake-up call.

Have a wonderful cruise!

Default UPGRADE

We have been on two cruises with Carnival and have been upgraded both times. First time was just 2 floors higher, but this time we booked a 8A and got upgraded to a 9A. I always book through Carnival. It may not be true but I assume they would take care of their customers first when it comes to upgrades.

I always book through Carnival themselves as well. I also usually choose my own cabin and get a discount for being a past guest. That, IMO, offsets the lack of an upgrade. The last time I got an upgrade was on Princess.

When you choose your own cabin, you pretty much write off an upgrade, unless Carnival needs that specific room (i.e., it's a handicap room or a connected room to another room) And getting the past guest discount also doesn't count out the upgrade.

My first cruise we weren't upgraded because we specified 3 rooms together. The cruise we took in March, I was upgraded from 8A to Cat 11 suite.

so.... even if we got our docs already with an assigned cabin (we booked oceanview guarantee), can we still be upgraded? this is our first cruise ever and we booked through a ta.

we have a decent room, but that thing about the balcony and the sunrise and the beverages.... i could get used to that!

Lisa, this is my first cruise, also. We have a guaranteed balcony, but I'm already panting that it might be upgraded to a penthouse suite! Doesn't hurt to dream, does it?

For the June cruise that Sandra and I will be on, I chose to do the upgrade and let them choose the cabin. I'll see how it goes.

I wasn't clear from the responses - if you get your docs with a room assignment on them, is it possible that will change when you board? We just purchased the category, not the room - guaranteed balcony. We wound up with that of course, but I am wondering if there's any chance our room will be changed when we actually board. It's my first cruise so I have no clue how this stuff works!

Thanks,
Lo

Once you recieve your docs, there is a very slim outside chance that your room could change. For example, you are in a balcony connecting room and someone wants to have the two rooms that connect. Or you are in a handcapped accessible room and don't need it, but they have someone in a wheelchair looking for a room. Doesn't happen often, but it could.

Remember, they'll never go below what you set as your limit. So if you chose a balcony guar., then you will have at least a balcony, or better.

We booked our 4A through a TA - and we were assigned a 4E -up to the Verandah Deck. It's still inside, but that's what I paid for after all, so we'll be okay with it. And I like being just one floor down from the Lido so sunshine is just one flight of steps away. (We're also toward the front so we have rooms above us and not the noise of the LIDO deck itself)

How can we tell if we are in a "good" cabin? I know they are all nice so I'm not super concerned, but I'm just curious. We are in 7249 which I guess is on the Verandah deck - I have no clue what any of that means except I could find it on the map. I guess it's the deck that I am uncertain about but as I said I'm sure it's fine either way.

I have been upgraded on all my cruises, but only within the category I booked. Important to book the what you will be happy with. Just got a two category upgrade for next month (1A to 4B). Inside cabins for me are just fine...I spend so little time in my cabin that it doesn't really matter. On my cruise last month, a four day, I got a total of 18 hours of sleep.....no need to pay extra for unused space.....

We have cruised Carnival at least a dozen times and only have been upgraded once due to faulty plumbing. It was a much nicer room, complete with a balcony. Loved it!

Congrats Butterflygirl! You'll love the balcony. We're still 9 months out but just today found out our room assignment. 8180 on Panorama deck. This is an upgrade from 8A to 8I. I think this cabin has the extended balcony.

lorandsean:
I booked Balcony Guarantee for lowest balcony price (smart to do when booking a few months in advance, but not too close to sail date). Yesterday my C/A (cruise agent only - no other travel) upgraded my family to 8I adjoining extended balcony cabins on Panorama deck of the Legend. We said on June 5th. I'm embarrassed to post the price we paid....we could get "arrested" for robbery! Also, my C/A (with him for 14 years) surprised us on my Alaska cruise with Princess 3 years ago; we booked a low level specific balcony cabin and were elated when our documents arrived that we were assigned to a wrap-around 3 room penthouse suite on the rear-most tail end of the ship. It's so big that there are only 2 suites of its kind on each deck. All marble & gold fixtures, walk in separate closets, 2 TV's 2 Bars, sectional sofa 4 arm chairs, and the balcony had more furniture and cushions that we could ever need. We also had formal dinner delivered to our balcony on 2 nights just for the hell of it. You've gotta keep checking prices to keep agents on their toes! Our June cruise price recently went down and we received $100. per person on-board credit before the cabin upgrades. We are doing quite well I think.YES!

Sounds like you've gotten some wonderful deals! We booked through an on-line travel service (Travelocity) but I think would go a different route next time. Congratulations!
