Default Popcorn on the Valor?

Hi everybody,

We're anxiously awaiting our trip on the Valor come September. We're trying to talk about it quite a bit to our three year old daughter -- to try and get her prepared for the experience. She's VERY excited to see the "Big Boat" (she calls it the Carnival Babber -- can't quite say Valor just yet.)

One thing we have been talking about is all the different kinds of food she will see, and how she can have ice cream or pizza or other yummy treats. Anyway -- I'm not sure if I said it or if she just got it stuck in her little mind -- but she is absolutely tied in knots over the fact that she can have popcorn all the time. All she talks about is having popcorn on the big boat. Geez -- the problem is -- I'm not sure there IS any popcorn on the Valor.

Has anybody who's sailed the Valor seen popcorn? Also, is there a movie theatre onboard, or is just in-cabin rentals?

Thanks for any input!

Angela

I'm racking my brain trying to remember if I saw popcorn anywhere on Destiny. There were a lot of things in the store but I don't remember seeing popcorn. And I don't remember seeing any microwaves to pop it if you do bring it with you to pop yourself.

Hi Dina,

None of my friends who have sailed Carnival remember seeing popcorn either.

I'm trying to divert my daughter's attention to the fact that she gets to sleep in a bunk bed, which she is terribly excited about!! If I can keep her mind on that, maybe she will forget about popcorn! (Yeah, right!)

Thanks for responding.

Hi BobolGrobol,

I know there's ice cream whenever you want. Maybe she can be diverted with that.

Sorry, no popcorn on the Valor. My grandson likes popcorn too but never missed it onboard...there are so many food choices, he didn't ask about it. He loved having soft serve ice cream and pizza available 24/7...they have a great fish and chips station on the second floor of Rosie's and the best fresh fruit selection. And, we ordered peanut butter and jelly sandwiches (which they toasted) from room service and that was a big hit (they are yummy!).

Hi,
I was on the Valor in Dec. 05 and I also don't remember seeing popcorn. You could check maybe with Camp Carnival and see if they offer any there. But like everyone else said maybe with all the other goodies she'll be so preoccupied that she'll forget about the popcorn. If it is a big issue however, I would buy some small snack bags of it (or make your own) and pack it away where she won't see it, just in case she really does want some.
About the movie theater...there is a small screen in one of the rooms I remember seeing and I can't remember how many movies they showed but they did show a few at night. The movies they showed though you could watch the next night in your stateroom. There was usually a kid flick playing in the room, usually repeated throughout the day and week, along with about 2 or 3 other movies.

Good Luck and Happy Cruising!!

Hey, thanks RoseTattoo and CandySpy, for responding as well.

I kinda figured there was no popcorn. *lol* Me and my big mouth -- I must have said something to her at one point and she just looooves popcorn. I think I may pack some, just in case, although now that you say there are peanut butter and jelly sandwiches from room service...that just may be the trick. She loves PB & J too!!!

I thought I read somewhere that you can get mac and cheese too and that it is delicious. If that's true, then we're all set, because her all time fave is mac and cheese.

I can't wait for this cruise!

Thanks again!

Ang, you are going to love the Valor, I have sailed on her twice and will be sailing on her again June 4th to the eastern Caribbean. The ship is beautiful, food and service is top notch. Don't miss the chocolate buffet in Rosie's...I believe it was on our last sea day...awesome!

Hi RoseTattoo,

I'm so glad to hear you say you love the Valor. I went round and round trying to decide which ship to book and finally decided on the Valor. It's been a loooong time since my last cruise and it was on NCL. This time around I have a hubby and a little girl, so I wanted something with lots of fun stuff for kids and Camp Carnival sounds really neat.

I cannot WAIT for this trip and we're doing Eastern too -- sounds gorgeous!

I would definitely pack some of those prepackaged snack bags of popcorn just in case. Not anywhere near as good as fresh, but it'll do in a pinch. I've got two kids, and I know how passionate and one-track minded three year olds can be. You just never know what might be the last straw as far as they're concerned! Besides, they would make great snacks to take along on shore excursions, waiting at the airport or cruise ship terminal, etc.

I think I will definitely bring prepackaged popcorn!

I told her last night that there is no popcorn on the Valor. But then I said, "but there is ice cream all the time!" And she looks at me and says, "And popcorn too Mama??"

*sigh*

I just returned from the Valor on 5/1. No popcorn. They did have movies in the Eagles Loungs, it's not a movie theater, but they do have a big screen. Enjoy! It's a great ship!

As a Platinum guest, we appreciated the benifits offered to us. There were definitely areas for improvement but overall the program is working well. We were: able to check in without waiting in the "general" check in line. However, we were required to wait in the line to have an embarkation photo taken - this line was quite long as we waited approximately 25 minutes after ascending to the 2nd floor (just after picking up our S&S cards). Carnival definitely makes mucho dinero off their photos! I would have liked the option as a Platinum member of bypassing this line. Between the check in time (even though we bypassed the general line), the time we waited to pick up our S&S cards and the photo shoot we probably waited as long as we had when the Platinum benefits were not available to Carnival guests. Just like all other past passengers, we were invited to the past passenger party - plenty of drinks to be had. A nice touch were the Carnival logo bags delivered to our state rooms, along with a Carnival pen and Valor pin. In addition, ALL guests in St. Thomas (because you are re-entering the US) must wake up early in the AM to check in with Immigration. The Platinum guests were able to bypass the line (let me tell you, it was very long, although moved quickly it appeared) by waiting in the Eagle's Lounge. We were the first group of passengers presented to Immigration - this was fantastic! On 2 evenings we received canapes in our room (nothing to boast about, but...still a nice touch!).Platinum guests are also given a Platinum-only line at the Purser's Desk. Platinum guests are rewarded with early embarkation - well, sort of...we were advised to meet in the Betsy Ross room, however, it was very difficult to get there since most of the lobby/atrium area was cordoned off and those choosing to carry off their own luggage were crowding the stairwells/exit area. This advantage provided to Platinum guests was not worthwhile as we still waited approximately 1 hour to disembark - the standard waiting period based on my experience. Finally, Platinum guest luggage was supposed to be in one area, however, our bags were in 3 different areas. The clear error here is that Platinum guests are provided with silver, Concierge Club luggage tags. There are other silver tags for the general population for which we believed the luggage handlers confused our baggage and set them in 3 different areas. In this regard, the luggage pick up process was more cumbersome than previously recalled. However, while these glitches can (and hopefully) will be worked out, we were impressed with the benefits awarded to us.

The food...I thought was excellent. Even their pizza which we had found to be lacking most recently, is now back to being the best as to compared to what we've had on other ships/cruise lines. The dining service was superb - Zuzana and Katarina were amazing! If you're reading this, thank you! The food quality and variety was definitely a plus! Hey, if your wait staff far exceed your expectations, please make an additional contribution to the wait staff team (in addition to your standard gratuity). They work so hard and encounter very long days.

Scarlett's, The Supper Club...while the food was very good, we found this to be lacking in professionalism. We had a 100% better experience on the Carnival Legend in December, 2005. The service was just average. In fact, if you can believe it, the Cruise Director's announcements (in this case, right at 8pm) were blasted in the Supper Club. This was very tacky and very unprofessional.

Now, to the Cruise Director and Social Hosts. I have to say, this was probably the most unprofessional team we've experienced thus far in our Carnival experience. The Cruise Director, Jen, was extremely loud and boisterous. Her announcements, often bordered on obnoxious. I do know that Jen is relatively new and I give her credit for making a good attempt at being very good. But she has to temper her voice so that she is not constantly screaming into the PA system.

Unfortunately, the "broadway" entertainment was also very lacking. I was excited to see the Far from Over production after hearing many good things about it and not having seen it previously, but the vocal talents were very amateurish. The female being somewhat better than her male counterpart. In most cases, he was out of his range/vocal abilities. I have to say, the final evening's performance of the "Legend" show with performances by our very own passengers, was the best of the show productions on this cruise. The shows on the Carnival Legend were far superior to that on the Valor. However, the house band and the gentleman playing on the Promenade at the Casino Bar (I believe it was Alex) were very good. In addition, the band in Winston's Cigar Bar was excellent.

Finally, I did notice that the focus on cleanliness, while many areas were squeaky clean, seemed to slip away on the Lido deck. On many occasions, wrapped tableware was placed on non-wiped tables, especially on the far aft deck are by the adult pool. We noticed this over the duration of the cruise.

We visited Nassau, St. Thomas and St. Maarten. The only thing I'd like to warn you about is Paradise Point. While the view is absolutely beautiful, the prices are outrageous. It now costs 18.00 per passenger (if you buy this ticket on your own - not sure what Carnival charges) just to ride the cable car to the top and back. Just a couple years ago it was less than 10.00. The drink prices are outrageous if you drink the fu-fu drinks. If you stick with beer, the Corona's were 4.50 (not too shabby) depending on who you placed your order with. I spoke with the Manager as one waitress charged me .50 extra for a beer. It's not that I'm cheap, it's the principle. Especially after I left her a 2.00 tip. I would strongly recommend spending all your money on a trip to St. John's, spefically, Trunk Bay - it's worth every cent and the nicest beach I've seen in my life.

If you happen to be shopping in the Havensight Mall area in St. Thomas (just off the ship) and you're dying for a drink, pay a visit to the Off Shore Bar. While it looks like a hole in the wall when you open the door, it's a nice quainty bar, a cool place to relax for a spell, and Robin makes a mean Bloody Mary. And the Heineken's are only $2.00 (prices subject to change without notice).

Cruise Director and Social Hosts: C- (they're trying)

Oh yeah, one last item I'd like to point out. I wish Carnival would cease placing the public photo shoots throughout the cruise in public walkway areas. In some spots, they actually expect you to stop while taking photos of fellow passengers. I understand this is a cash cow, and I'm ok with photos, but please don't inconvenience other passengers.

Let me know if you have any specific questions!
