If the card has a Visa or Mastercard symbol on it. It should be fine. Just remember they will put a hold on the bank account.

You can't physically use a debit card onboard, they are treated just like a credit card...a hold is placed on your account as a deposit for your onboard purchases, that hold amount (depending on cruise length) is tied to your Sail & Sign card which is used for all purchases onboard. If, during the course of your cruise, your Sail & Sign account exceeds the amount of the original deposit, additional holds will be added on to your debit/credit card. I believe a debit card is attached to your checking account...just make sure there are enough funds in your checking account to cover any overages.

I also posted this on your other thread....with debt cards, depending on your daily bank $ limit, it could be a problem. We tried it once and when they put the tips, drinks, excursions, pictures, boutique purchases, we had gone over ours. We just switched to a credit card. When we got home we had our limit increased.

We used our debit card on our last 2 cruises and had no problems. I called our bank before we left Alaska and told them where we would be traveling to ( Miami and the 3 ports of call)and the approximate amount we would be putting on our card to Carnival and also our expected arrival back in alaska.

When they put a hold of say 30 on a debit card is it per person in your party or for all of the people in your party. There are 4 of us going so will it be 300 per person?

If all 4 people will be tied to the same debit/credit card, it is a per person charge on that card.

I use my Visa debit card when securing my cruise booking. Then they swipe it when I check in, to take care of my Sail & Sign account. There's never been a problem. I've done this exactly the same way for my past ten or so cruises.

Some banks do not impose a daily limit, nor a hold. At least mine doesn't. Perhaps it's just my account? I make sure there is plenty of money in my checking (debit) account to cover 'way more than I will spend on a cruise.

I never think about it again after check-in, nor do I have to go to the purser's desk to 'settle up'. So - I don't know what could be a problem using a debit card...?

BlueChef - my bank also does not impose a hold or a daily limit and like you, I also use my debit card (Visa) for cruise bookings and sign and sail card.

In the brochure, in the back, it will tell you what the hold will be depending upon the length of your cruise.
