We booked a cruise directly with Celebrity - no upgrade. We then booked a cruise with Princess through a TA - and obtained a slight upgrade. Very nice. Our next cruise was with RCCL - and we booked with an internet travel agency. The price was so reasonable - so we didn't expect - or get an upgrade. So my policy was - only book with TAs or internet companies - because they can obtain upgrades or price reductions.
We wanted to try Carnival - and we contacted Carnival directly. I mentioned in passing that we usually go with TAs - as we might have a chance of being upgrades and price reductions, but I wanted to see if Carnival was having any in-house specials. I mentioned that we had cruised with Princess, as Carnival now owns Princess. to determine if cruising with one of the Carnival lines helped any in getting a better deal.
We booked directly with Carnival because they
1. Reduced the lowest internet price by 25 dollars for each passenger
2. Gave us a two catagory upgrade for having cruised with Princess, and located us in a much better area.
Thus the moral of the story - always contact the cruise line itself before booking with a TA or internet company to determine what is going on, and mention the cruises that you have taken with other lines that are financially related to the line you are interested in.
