Default Is it necessary?

I'm a divorced father who is taking my 2 kids to the Bahamas. I have recently that you have to take a letter from your ex stating that it ok that the kids are taken on a cruise. Is that true. If it is why doesn't Carnival state that somewhere in their information. It's not a big deal but just wonderng. The airlines don't ask for something like that.

I'm guessing that it would be a good idea since your taking the kids across state lines to get onto a cruise and perhaps out of the country. But then I'm kind of guessing with that. It never hurts to cover yourself.

Yes it is true. I've been asked for it more than once. It seems to depend on who is checking you in whether they ask for it or not. If they don't ask you and you don't have it you're ok. If they do ask for it and you don't have it, you could be denied boarding. The airlines don't ask for it as most likely you've been flying on domestic flights and not leaving the country. On a cruise to the Bahamas you are leaving the country with your minor children. In order to cover their a**es they want to make sure you have your ex-wife's permission to take the children out of the country in case you don't return with them.

How are they going to know if you are divorced? Do the kids have the same last name as you?

The picture should tell it all. Yes you need to have a letter that is notarized. Hopefully it's not a stormy breakup. Mine took sometime but the girls had a great time. Also don't forget about 07 and passports.

Thanks for the info. I've already asked my ex about a letter sothat's no big deal. It just never would have crossed my mind to have that. It would not have been fun if you had been not allowed to board the ship because I did not have one.

When I saw this, I thought of my sister who is recently divorced and taking her 4 kids (2 of them minor) on a cruise for their summer vacation. I e-mailed my PVP and received this response...

"No it is not a requirement, I always say it is good to have but they will not even ask even if the childs name is different. I have only sent out a parent form to a friend of my husbands because he was still having problems with his ex regarding his children from that marriage even though they were divorced for over ten years and he had children from present marriage, his ex was punishing him for his past and in turn also punishing his children.

Anyhow they went on their cruise no one asked for the form but he wanted to make sure that she did not go around saying anything bad about him...

Do not worry no one will ask."

Find a good PVP, like I have, and you will get questions answered quickly...this one in less than 10 minutes. In any case, I think the best thing is probably to assess your relationship and go with that.

Hope this helps!

Hi roynga,

Well, it took some hunting, but I finally found this on Carnival's site (I don't know why they "hide" it! ):

Quote:
When traveling with a minor and both parents/legal guardians are not cruising, we strongly recommend bringing an original signed letter from the absent parent/legal guardian authorizing the minor to travel with you. This will expedite processing by the Department of Homeland Security. Please note that a notarized letter to this effect is required if debarking with children in Mexico.

In addition to the above requirements, all guests 16 years of age or older must provide an official photo ID
You can find the complete text here:

http://www.carnival.com/CMS/Static_T...cy_policy.aspx

I'm glad you and your ex get along well enough for her to sign the letter. Some people aren't that lucky .

I wouldn't count on a PVP's info because it's a Homeland Security issue, not a Carnival issue.

Better safe than sorry!

I hope you and your kids have a wonderful cruise!

Get the letter, you may be asked for it, you may not. If however you are asked for it and don't have it you could be denied boarding.

Get the letter. A PVP is like any reservationist they are not at the dock and it's easlier to have on then worry about not being allowed to board the ship. I know when I took the girls I was asked for one. Less worries will make this a more enjoyable cruise.

Hi Irish Shark,

I have no idea why Homeland Security would care !

I'm just quoting from the Carnival site:

Quote:
This will expedite processing by the Department of Homeland Security.
I can't figure out a lot of things done in the name of "Homeland Security"! I just follow the rules!
