Default smooth sailing

Are the seas any smoother on the Pacific side in November compared to the Atlantic or Caribbean?

We went to Hawaii in 11/04 out of Los Angeles. The first three days were pretty rough with high winds and rain and high seas. On the retun side, it was very calm.
