Call Carnival to confirm this but this past March I got on a ship with an expired passport and no birth certificate. I couldn't find my birth certificate anywheres in the house so I took the passport and prayed.

I was also told, very nicely, that I better get it renewed before December of this year when passports will be absolutely necessary. So, I don't know if I was lucky, if they're really not too concerned right now or what, but I did get on/off the ship with an expired passport and nothing else....

Good Luck....

Oh, and as luck would have it, you know when I got home from the cruise, opened the drawer to put away my passport, there looking directly at me was my birth certificate!!!

I think you should be able to re-new your passport, look online for a form, get some new pics taken and send in. Not sure when your cruise is, but hopefully you have enough time??

Even though its expired, take it with you. Its still a form of identification that they can track on. Take your birth certificate for additional but I bet they will let you get by on that. Just make sure you renew it when you get back

Everything is fine. I am still using my expired passport for cruises. It is good for use until it has been expired for 10 years. It tells you that on the fine print of the Carnival web site.

Enjoy your trip.

bring it along, but do also get that certified copy of your birth certificate. All you have to do is go to the town/city hall- of the town/city where you were raised- go to the town/city clerks office and get the certifed copy of your birth certificate, make sure that it either has a raised seal or a water mark. You will also need your driver's license on the cruise for an additional picture id, in case immigration give you a hard time about the expired passport. Its not the cruise line that you have to worry about, its immigration.

Well, seeing as how I am leaving for my vacation tomorrow, I am going to have to just pray. I will call Carnival as well later this morning. It's just one of those brainfarts that I forgot to renew my passport this past January. Thanks for all the helpful replies!

what i would do is when you call Carnival, ask them to fax something to you in writing so that you will have something physically in hand.
If you are near your hometown i still would advise finding the time to run into the town/city hall and get your birth certificate.

PLEASE LISTEN TO ME AND STOP WORRING. I have used my expired passport four times this year. It tells you on their Carnival site that you can use it until it has been expired for 10 years. Your passport number will bring up all that is needed and proof for Homeland Security. The only reason they get you to renew is so they will have a current picture of you. Take your passport and your drivers licences, and for God's sake have fun on your cruise.

Well, from what the previous posters have written, it looks like he can go with the expired one, but I'd certainly re-new it once he returns home and he'll be good to go for the next one.

Yes, he needs to get a new one.

The thing is that he is going to Mexico and no passport is required for a US citizen to enter Mexico. The passport rules are set by the country(ies) that you are visiting. If he was going to, say, various ports in Europe, he would not get vary far.

Also, it is the State Department that sets the rules for passports not Homeland Security or Carnival.

Hi jwtseng,

Well, it took some searching, but I finally found this on the Carnival website (why do they "hide" these things :

Quote:
U.S. citizens must present proof of citizenship in the form of a passport (valid or expired for less than 10 years), original birth certificate, state-issued certified copy of a birth certificate from the Department of Health and Vital Statistics, or original Naturalization papers.
So, what Luanne said is true (not that I'd ever doubt her info !).

You'll be fine with your expired passport.

Have a wonderful cruise!

Once again I owe Fern a thanks for backing me up. A lot of times, we response to posts without really reading them. I knew that he was very short to his cruise date, and I knew he had a passport and it was expired. I also knew what to do. I didn't need to tell him to renew it after he gets back, because he didn't ask us if he should.

Irish, It is Homeland Security. Try Googling it to see for yourself. The reason the expired works now is that you do not need a passport to go to Mexico yet. ( For Europe you do and have for many years.) It is a lot of this and that so I won't try to explain, but right now, HOMELAND SECURITY requires the cruise lines to show proof of citizenship. This can be done either through a passport, or Birth Certificate. They also need to prove if someone is only a visitor in the US, or if they are living here part time, or etc.

And for the record, when you do your fun pass, if the date of issue is not on the drop down then you only need to by pass the whole section, so that the computer will over ride it. This info came straight from Carnival. I have done it 4 times now, and it works like a charm.

Yes, I know that I need to renew my passport, and I will do so as soon as the go ahead is given, due to my hubby's line of work.

I hope that this will help in some way.

Luanne

Yep case in point right there ....

Isn't that what I said? .... MEXICO no passport required, and who cares if it is expired? I also said he would have a problem going to, say, Europe.

And it is the State Department .... http://travel.state.gov/passport/passport_1738.html

"Within Department of State’s Bureau of Consular Affairs, the Passport Services Directorate serves U.S. citizens intending international travel through passport issuance and protects the integrity of the U.S. passport as proof of U.S. citizenship at home and around the world.

Passport Services consists of:
- 13 Regional Passport Agencies
- 1 Gateway City Passport Agency
- 1 Special Issuance Agency
- 2 National Processing Facilities
- The National Passport Information Center;
- A network of more than 7,000 public government offices across the U.S. designated by Passport Services to accept applications; and
Headquarters offices in Washington, DC"

The new requirements for travel to and from Mexico, Canada, and Caribbean begin on December 31, 2006. For now, expired passports and other forms of identification will probably do.

If you still need it and are crunched for time, you can get your passport in less than 2 weeks at www.uspassportbureau.com
I used them last year, and they saved my vacation!

! Too funny. Never even paid attention to when the thread was initiated. Just reading and responding to what appeals/applies to me. Maybe threads should be marked 'closed' after a certain amount of time then...?

This thread would not have been renewed except that a spammer somehow found it and posted to it. Otherwise it would be sitting in oblivion.

If you haven't noticed yet - this thread about expeired passports being valid is from FIVE YEARS AGO.

We now recommend passports to Mexico and Canada. You may be able to get by without them but it is a very excruciating process. Here is where you go for updated info:
