Default Another Formal Night Question

I leave for my first cruise next Monday (so, so excited!) I am worried about what to wear on formal night. I hate to buy a new dress - - can you get away with wearing just a simple little black dress and maybe dressing it up with jewelry? Or do I need something with sparkles on it? Thanks!

This is one subject that I worried the most about on our first cruise, and one that has caused the most talk. Let's see if we can take the worry out.

Formal means formal, but for today's Carnival cruises, formal has been redefined. Today formal means cleaned up, and looking nice. It can be as dressed up as a formal gown, to church type clothes, to less than that.

I know that there are many who morn the loss of the by gone days of everyone dressing to the nines, but those days are gone.

I also think that it is a crying shame for someone to miss the formal night experience, because someone has made them to think they are not dressed well enough.

Your black dress will be fine. Go and have a wonderful experience.

A simple black dress with jewelry would be fine for formal night. Go and have a great time!! Be sure to go to the Captain's Party before dinner. You will get free drinks and hors d'oeuvres.

Happy cruising to all!!!!

I think that it is your cruise, you decide. I personally enjoy getting really really dressed up because I am a jeans and flipflop girl at home. You can be as formal as you like or as comfortable. There have been a couple of times where I made something simple and basic look formal with the right jewelry. Go for it!

Hi stefsand,

Like Luanne Russo said, formal for Carnival just means looking clean and nice. Just make sure that you don't look like that you've just stepped out from a farm or something.

I think that your simple black dress with jewellery would be perfect. I just went on a cruise a week ago; and, on formal night, I saw a huge variety of dresses, from cocktail dresses, to little black dresses, to fully decked-out ballgowns! Before my cruise, I was worried about to wear, too; but, after my experience, I can tell you that the best would be to wear whatever you feel is comfortable. It would be such a shame for someone to miss their Fun Ship experience just because they feel under-dressed!

Have a great time on your first cruise!

I just got off the CELEBRATION three days ago. I wore my little black dress with jewelry. There will be more "little black dresses" than anything else!!! It's almost like "if you don't have a little black dress" you ... oh my. lol
You just make sure it's comfortably so you can enjoy that lobster or prime rib! Have a wonderful cruise!

Haha dad, I'm telling, and she will beat you. If she doesn't, then I will and I get to blame it on pregnancy hormones. Just remember, she may not check these forums, but I do.

You could definately "dress up" that little black dress with some sparkley jewelry or maybe even a sparkley wrap or large scarf worn as a wrap. Get some "sexy" shoes and put your hair in an up-do with sparkley clips and there you have it...you are formal!
