Before going on your next cruise, have your travel agent send you a list of all the non smoking areas on the ship that you will be cruising on. This is a great way to plan your paths from point A to point B without getting caught up in the smoke filled lounges and walkways. This is a great thing if you have children, handicapped or elderly people with you. No need to smell like smoke after just leaving your cabin freshly showered.
I agree with Luanne. If you hate smoke, it would be easier to find out where the smoking areas are and avoid them.
There are only a few smoking areas on the major cruise lines: one side of the pool deck, the casino (or even half of it), a bar or two, and the cabins. Just avoid these areas and live and let live.
99.9% of smokers will not smoke in non-smoking areas. If you are bothered by the other .1% point out that they're in a non-smoking area or notify the cruise staff.
It's really not such a "Big Deal" !
That is what I have done. On my last cruise, 50% were smoking in non smoking areas. And as far as mentioning it to the staff, they done nothing. I was told at the pursers desk that Carnival employees can't approach the guests. That was lame.
