This is my 6th cruise and I never know when the lines are the shortest to board..If the ship leaves at 4..what about getting there at 3:30? Help[/b]
You have a good chance of missing the ship.
I would be there NLT 1300 for a 1600 sail time.
SS Norway (12 times) '85 - '97; Radiance OS 06/01; Island Princess 11/04, Grand Princess 11/04/05, Golden Princess 7/21/06, Golden Princess 2/24/07, Explorer of the Seas 12/23/07, Island Princess 11/15/08
Generally, you must be aboard at least 30 minutes before sailing on Carnival. However, I agree with Irish Shark, be there by 1:00 PM. Many people show up before noon and should be boarded by 1:00, so the lines should be short.
From the Carnival website:
You must check in at least 30 minutes prior to departure to avoid the risk of automatic cancellation.
IMO, I wouldn't chance the "30 minute" rule! It seems to be cutting it to close to me !

Last year we arrived at about 3:40 PM and had no line at all. In fact they had already done the mustard drill. The Conquest hasn't been pulling out of port until after 5:00 PM lately. Not sure if I would cut it as close at 3:30 on purpose (ours was not intentional) but 3:00 PM should still cut out the lines. This year we are going to be there as soon as possible (noonish) so we can have lunch etc.
We try to get aboard by noon so we can have a nice lunch & explore the ship before the fire drill..... We got on the Clebration at 11:30 & it was great.... Our room was open so we could drop off our carry-ons in the room.....
