BobM: I've had good look with Expedia, but I like to shop around too. Check both the airline's websigte and also sites like Expedia, Travelocity and Orbitz and find the right price at the right time. My friend and I booked our flights through expedia a while back To Orlando for our December cruise and got what we thought was a good rate - $212 - round trip per person from Kansas City Missouri to Orlando. Just a thought.

I almost always use Orbitz. I have always got a good deal from them. I like seeing my itinerary and flight times before I purchase. Some booking engines do not allow that, Orbitz does.

Try holidayvacations.com
They have all the good engines and services on one page.
Does take a minute or so to load.

Have used Expedia a few years ago, and ended up dealing with the hotel myself. Wrong name booked etc. They did get the flights right in all fairness.

If your near a hub, go directly to the airline site. They don't charge the extra fee and are usually cheaper.

What I do is check the major booking engines such as:

orbitz.com
qixo.com
expeda.com

and find the lowest flight options and then go the airline's website, that is offering the flight. You can usually find it for the same price or lower and bypass the the service charge that is added by the other sites.

One thing I have found is that most of the booking engines DO NOT give you all the options nor does one site always give you the best deal.

Take care,
Mike

You should remember that some airlines do not participate in online services like travelocity, expedia, and orbitz. In particular, neither Southwest nor JetBlue participate and those are two of the better airlines for price and ontime performance.

I used a discount broker for our flights to South America next Feb.

I got two first/business class tickets from LAS to SCL and return from EZE to LAS for less than what the other folks wanted for one ticket.

Nobody else even came close.

I travel for work and I book my own flights to many destinations inside the United States as well as Canada. Flying out of Alaska, I book through the airline website almost always. I know using the airline site directly you will get everything right, by removing the middle man 3rd party website. I also find that checking various days of the week, and times during the day can change flight amounts due to short and limited fare sales airlines put on.

I use www.sidestep.com.

It lists the airlines, orbitz, etc. EXCEPT for certain airlines like Southwest.
After you get the results, you can edit them by checking certain fields. It's very easy to use.

After I find out the best rate, I then check Southwest. Once I find my cheapest rate for my desired dates/times, I then book on the airline's website.

What's really weird is that sometimes I get flights listed on sidestep that I can't get on the airline's website. That's when a phone comes in handy.

Maybe you do. If your post is referring to mine, that is exactly what I did. I booked through the Internet on ITN for flight tickets.

Default how far in advance do you book the tickets?

How far in advance do you book the flight tickets? I keep looking on southwest for a good deal and they finally came out with february flights however EVERYTHING is unavailable. Trying to get from new orleans or baton rouge or lafayette to fort lauderdale without paying an arm and a leg in february! I did find on cheaptickets.com round trip to miami for 300.00 but then I'd also have to buy transfers to fort lauderdale.

I have found that some airlines use the 21, 14 & 7 day rule... Booking with at least 21 days in advance gets a better price... I flew to Chicago a few years back, looked at the price 21 days in advance but booked at 20 days & had to pay a bigger orice....
