It is a pretty place, and will be much better looking than Calica. Yes, beach is nice, good food, and probably some water sports. Let me do some more research for you, and I will get back.
Playa Del Carmen has beautiful beaches and great bars.
Xcaret is a wonderful eco-park that kids and adults will love.
The Tulum ruins are fantastic if you are into Mayan history.
If you are into geology you can spend hours going through the piles of gravel right outside the ship. Where the ship docks is actually a gravel pit but once outside the area it's actually very nice! It's one port where you have to get away from the ship.
Take care,
Mike

It's $10 per cab, not per passenger, and the cabs hold up to 4 ppl.
How much time does it take to get to Playa Del Carmen from the port? We get back from Tulum at 3 and the ship leaves port at 6. Will we have enought time to do a little shopping?? Carla
Since we are on the subject of Calica, what is there to do right around the port; we have already done Tulum and Xel-Ha, Xcaret. Any suggestions from the pros?

I am in no way a pro but unless it has changed,or unless you can run heavy equipment, there is nothig to do at the port. It is some sort of land fill business. I guess you would have to see it to understand.

That's what I have been hearing, sounds like a good day to stay on the ship.

Not necessarily. Lots of cool tours, and the tour buses and vans line up in the land fill parking lot. Just don't expect to see island girls, and marching bands. More like construction men with butt cracks.

well I guess as long as it is "native" butt crack.

Oh It is native alright!!! I should know, I looked very closely.
Glad to see that you are in a good mood and feeling better; cause you can be pretty funny Thought I read a post of yours somewhere where you were feeling a little down/frustrated.

My family took the taxi ride to Playa Del Carmen. Did a little shopping and enjoyed the free beach. It was very relaxing on the beach. The vendors on the street were alittle pushy but not as bad as Jamaica. For ten bucks it was a very inexpensive good time.
It takes about 15 minutes in the cab to get to Playa del Carmen. You'll have time to shop, if you want to. You really need to see Playa del Carmen because it is beautiful. There is a gorgeous beach right there off Fifth Avenue. Walk north on Fifth Avenue. There are many shops and outdoor restaurants. It is really a nice place to visit.
PLEASE DON'T STAY ON THE SHIP. Playa del Carmen is beautiful, and I think you'll love it. Take a taxi to town and walk down Fifth Avenue. Also, the beach is absolutely beautiful!!
When you first arrive in Calica you will see dirt and lots of industrial equipment. If you want an inexpensive deal take a cab to the beach at Playa Del Carmen for $10.00 and enjoy!. You will see that white sand and crystal clear blue water that everyone talks about. After the beach you can walk around and shop. If you like beaded necklaces there is a vendor on every corner! There is a Burger King there also but remember all the prices are in pesos so get a conversion chart so you dont pay $8.00 for a soda . Enjoy the beach!
Calica is not actually a town, but a cement company that allows ships to dock at their pier after hurricane destroyed the Playa pier. There are about 10 vendors that set up and that is all there is to see unless you go into Playa. It is about a 10 min drive to 5th Ave and beaches. There is a public beach area with restaurant and bar - I think it is called something like the Blue Parrot Beach Club. Each of the street crossings on 5th have a different marine animal on the street sign post - this beach area is at the sign with the Dolphin.
Whatever you do - don't do the Playa de Carmen Shopping and Beach Break excursion. It is a waste of time - I did it last week while there. Do Playa on your own.

Tell the taxi driver 5th Avenue and they will drop you in a convenient location. Do not miss out on this opportunity to see this little village! Lots of shopping and 5th Avenue runs parellel to the beach and all is in walking distance. Be sure and take plenty of small bills for your shopping. They will usually give change in pesos. There are lots of Eropean vacationers and there were some topless sunbathers on the beach. I felt like I got the true sense of what Mexico is like in this village. The taxi drivers will line up in a central location when you are ready to go back, they tell you but I don't remember the intersection. This has been my favorite place to visit in Mexico.
