Default What's there to do in Nassau?

October 22nd we're setting sail on Valor. With our route we are only in Nassau from 7am to 2pm. Does anyone have any ideas of what to do with such a short stay?

Thanks,
Cheryl

Here's some options:

Take a ship excursion to "swim with the stingrays".

Take a taxi or a ferry to Atlantis to check out a great hotel and casino.

Take a taxi or carriage ride to the Queen's stairway ... amazing ... worth the trip.

Shop in the city!

I had a great time with no organized tour booked in Nassau. I went to the Nassau Zoo called Ardastra Gardens and zoo. Here you can watch trained Flamingos march (bring your camcorder) and feed Lory parrots by hand. It's a beautiful place. They will take your photo with a big African parrot for a donation, and even call a cab for you when your ready to leave.

It cost about $8 each way cab fare or you can take a city bus one way for $1.00 that's what we did. We stopped at the Fish Fry also called Arawak Caye for lunch a great area away from the crowds where the locals eat. Looks like Key West with open air eateries, and the Conch is wonderful do try it! If you would like the zoo's web site just message me, you can also get a brocure at the tourist info as soon as you get off the ship. Honestly it was my best day in any of the ports!

I'll second the Queens Staircase. When you get to the top, a local will probably approach you and tell you the story behind the staircase. Then he'll want a handout...the spiel is worth a few dollars.

There's an excellent Pirate Museum just a few blocks from the staircase.

I hear the Atlantis casino/hotel has a tour too, and they hve some excellent aquariums and a waterslide that goes thru the shark tank.

Showcat, thanks for the info on Ardasta Gardens. I think this would be a great place to visit and had already decided to go there. It sounds like something we would really like. Do you remember the price to get in the zoo. Also, did you do the Botanical Gardens across the street from the zoo? It sound great.

The price for the zoo is $12, well worth it. You won't get this up close to animals in the states. I could have pet a leopard through the cage if I was brave enough. The zoo had gardens attached so I didn't go to any other gardens. The bus takes a bit long to get there, cause it won't leave till it's full; so if you want to save more time take a cab both ways. Just have the staff call you one when your almost ready to leave. I will mail you the website for the zoo. They have photos of how they kept the animals safe during the hurricane. I hope more people support this zoo, it was clean, very pretty and the staff was really great.

ArkJudy:
Is there an internet site you can search that swimming with the rays? Or is it a shore excursion offered by the cruise?
Can you remember how much that cost?
Thanks

Visit the Atlantis Resort. You can take a taxi (not water taxi) to there for about $4/person. The resort would be great for many pictures and it is simply magnificent. The only drawback, though, is that you can see the gorgeous, pristine beach, but not go there Still worth a visit, though. Also, do some shopping in the tourist area. There is a small convenience store there that sells souvenir keychains for 1/2 price other stores...you just have to find it.
