Fun Ship Dollars

As before, if I come up with some new ideas, or have discovered something new on the web, I like to pass it along, so here goes.

I think the best possible cruise is one that you can go and enjoy, and it be paid for when you get home. But, there has always been that problem with the On Board Credit that we always end up with.

I now know to plan ahead, and pay for the cruise. I always include the tips with the price of the cruise, so that gets paid at the same time. I always book our excursions on line, and get those paid for, but that OBC always got me. Well, this is where your Fun Ship Dollars come in. You can go to the Carnival web site, and purchase them. You can have them delivered to your home but you can also have them applied to your on board account. What you do is when they ask for an address to be sent, put down your booking number. I have not tried this yet, because I have just discovered it, but I am told that Carnival will send you an e-mail to let you know that they have been applied, and I am told that it will also appear on your docs when you get them.

Now, what all of this means is that each month, before your cruise, if you will buy one of the dollars(they come in different amounts) you will have paid for your OBC by the time you cruise. If you do not use all of the amount on board, they will refund the left over amount.

If you are the type of person that needs to see it in your hands, you can have the dollars sent to your home, and when on board, go to the Pursers deck, and apply them.

So what's the advantage Luanne? Is it just so that you don't have to remember to actually BRING the funship dollars with you and then visit the pursers desk? (This notion makes me smile because I am SO notorious for this sort of thing. Once we went on a trip to Florida and I had coupons for absolutely EVERYTHING and when we got home, I hadn't used one of them! Seemed everytime we went somewhere, even if I had them in my purse, I forgot to bring them out and use them. Hopeless, that's me!)

Thanks Luanne

I just bought some for stocking stuffers, for our February cruise.

I thought they would look neat to see them sticking out of the top. Its money I would have had to spend anyhow sooner or later.
Thanks Gail

Hi Luanne,

I hate to disagree with you (really, I do!), but why pay any more than you have to before your cruise?

Why not put this "extra" money in an interest bearing savings account, use a credit card and then pay it off (immediately :D ) after the cruise? That way you have the use of your $$, not the cruise line!

I guess it's "different strokes, for different folks LOL !

I guess for me it's knowing that it's all paid for, after the cruise. If you don't have the money to pay it off, when you get back, then the credit card company gets it, but if you buy a little each month up to your cruise, then you are good. It's just an idea.

Yes, and it's a great idea for people who prefer to be "debt free" after their cruise!

We all do things differently (how boring would it be if we were all the same LOL !) What's comfortable for you (and others) may not be comfortable for us! I'm glad that you're comfortable with the way you do things :) ! What works for you is the best!

The way I figure too is the so called "high" interest that I would get on a few hundred dollars ought to work out to about 5 bucks in the long run. Not enough for me. This way I can buy bits at a time so it doesn't hurt quite as much as all at one time.

Luanne, did you see my question to you? Are you saying the main reason to direct it to your onboard instead of taking the certificates is so that you don't have to remember to bring them with you? I've just been collecting the certificates that they mail me. Thanks.

I'M sorry Kim, I have been working all day, and did miss you question.

The reason I suggested that you apply them to your account, is so you don't have to go to the pursers desk. I try to stay away from that place as much as possible, because there is forever someone whining. LOL

I have to say, I have not purchased the dollars before. I just was doing research, and found out it could be done.

This would also be a good gift to someone, who might be getting married, birthday etc.

The reason for the research, was we are still paying for our last cruise, because it was last minute. Cruising to me has become a drug.

Hubby gets orders for Iraq= me a cruise to make it all better LOL

This time I want to not have those end of the cruise blues. It will be fun, and painless, because it will be paid for. I am also getting more expensive, because this time I have booked the penthouse suite. Boy will hubby be surprised this time. LOL

Fern is right though(I do believe we were sisters in another life LOL ) It does depend on the person.

But how bad is it to have so many ideas, and you get to pick the one that works for you and your family. LOL

Well I've already bought $400 in fun ship dollars and do intend to buy some more. Not sure how much to get though. Our excursions are booked all independently with the exception of one that only I'm taking (the cooking class in Cozumel). The guys will go and ride ATV's that day and Carnival wouldn't let my 17 yr. old drive but the independent one will so they're going with that.

The way I figure though is if I OVER buy and we have credit left, we'll have no choice but to go on another cruise!!! haha Poor hubby. He'll die since I already talked him into 2 for 2007 as it is. Teach him to tell me I could do whatever I wanted for our anniversary next year!

LOL LOL LOL For the ATV's Be sure guys wear jeans, no matter what time of the year, because it is a dirty excursion. Also, if you don't plan to wash clothes on board, take a seperate laundry bag for their clothes. Also, tell them not to forget bathing suits.

Thanks for the info Luanne. Boy am I glad I'm begging off of THAT excursion if it's all dirty and ick. Much rather be creating in the mexican kitchen then lounging around the beach while it's served to me with oodles of wine to wash it all down. Ahhhhhhhh the life. Let them splash around in the mud and bump their bums off on the ATV. I'm quite ok with that! LOL

LOL Hello! I read on one of these boards, the same thing you are suggesting. Buy Fun Ship Dollars before hand and have the cruise, plus spending money paid off before you go. We are doing a completely cash cruise, so buying theses certificates ahead of time, means more money saved to drink, for the casino, or souveniors, etc. I have entered my booking number in the address line, and did get an email back from Carnival, plus verified it with the bank that they got the money.

Plus, I also agree, stay away from the pursers desk, at all cost. We also plan to plan excursions on line too, most likely through Carnival, so we are sure we'll make it back on the ship and get a refund if its canceled for any reason.

Thanks for the post. Oh by the way, what does OBC mean?

Dorothy

KAWS October 30th, 2006 05:25 PM

Dorothy, OBC is on board credit.

I guess since we've already bought carnival funship dollars AND had them sent to us, it won't make any difference whether or not we continue doing that vs putting them on our account. We'll still have to visit the dreaded pursers desk anyway to unload the dollars that we have already received.

Oh well - live and learn. You don't even have the option for the other cruise that we're going on later next year (Princess). You can't buy squat ahead of time.

I think I've read somewhere, that when you embark you can apply them to the S&S card, hopefully then you won't have to visit the pursurs desk.

:?: If anyone else, knows if I'm correct, or wrong, please pipe in. Thanks.
Dorothy
