I'm getting quotes on a feb. trip on the Holiday. One thing the TA's are offering is an "upgrade from 6-A to a 6-D. What does this mean? And what difference might we expect because we have sailed Carnival once before?
The difference is where on the ship the cabin is located. The "higher" the letter ("A" being lowest, "D" being highest) the letter, the higher deck on the ship.

IMHO I would ask the TA if the upgrade could be from a 6A Guarantee to a 6D Guaranty. That way you would get NO LESS than a 6D cabin and IF you get upgraded, it would be to either a cat 11 suite or cat 12 suite.
We did that on the Elation and got a cat 12 suite.
AK is right, you'd probably stand a better chance of an even bigger upgrade. But you'd have to actually PAY for a 6D cabin. Right now you are in the free upgrade category. Once you guarantee to a 6D, you'd need to make up the difference. Might be worth it, though!

Dorothy is right..you'd have to pay the difference from a 6A guarantee to a 6D guarantee. The price of a 6D gaurantee is less than the price of a 6D room assignment, but to increase your chances of an upgrade to a suite it might be worth it.
Since they are offering you an upgrade from a 6A room assignment to a 6D room assignment, they may be ok with keeping you at a guarantee status rather than a room assignment without an increase in price. it's worth asking. The worse they can do is say no.
