There are many solutions. You can take an over the counter medication (talk to your pharmacist) or try ginger or a wrist band. Ships these days really do not have a lot of motion.

Personally I would not recommend the patch...especially if you take other medicine, it can produce some pretty bizarre side effects including anxiety attacks and hallucinations.

The Bonine chewable stuff works great for and the family, but I've only needed it once.

Modern cruise ships are really quite stable...my Mom was the type who could get nauseated watching the waves on TV. When we took her on an Alaskan cruise, there was one stretch of open sea where she stayed in bed most of the day, but otherwise had no bad effects at all.

Ginger pills are your best bet. After trying everything else, my wife and I used ginger this cruise and it worked great. My wife get motion sickness very easily and never had 1 problem at all.

We always get motion sickness pills from either the pursers desk or the room steward. Eitherway the ship provides them at no charge if you need them. I have only needed them for myself once.

Go with the ginger pills. They really are the best, and there were no side effects. I was a user of dramimine and bonine, and both would make me drowsy. Bring the ginger pills, and maybe some bonine just in case, but I really thing the ginger will be the best.

Good luck!

I wouldn't rely on ginger pills alone, though. How about take both ginger pills and Bonine along? Bonine comes in a non-drowsy formula which shouldn't make you drowsy. I can't stand the kind of you chew up (yucky tasting), so I always just get the regular pills. Your pharmacist can sell you meclazine (Bonine is a brand name for meclazine) over the counter for much cheaper than what you can buy Bonine for - just ask.

If you know ahead of time you get seasick, I would recommend taking a Bonine the night before you sail. If you feel as though you should, then take one every night, with ginger pills as a back up.

You DON'T want to ruin a cruise by being sick! Good luck.

Tammy - a couple of questions. Do you get motion sickness when you ride, or fly or was it just when you were on a boat? If it was when you were on a boat, chances are a cruise ship won't effect you too much, the ships have wonderful stabalizers to give a very smooth ride. If however you get sick riding in the car or flying then i would suggest that you talk to your doctor a bout the patch. Mind you the patch is for severe motion sickness only, not for the mild queezies.
For the mild queezies i am a huge fan of the ginger remedy. You can do it as the ginger pills, you can get crystalized ginger candy, ginger cookies or gingerale- as long as it is made from real ginger and not just flavored.
We have never had to use the Bonine, but it is always available as a back up plan. Many folks have also had very good results with the seabands.

We took our dauther on our last cruise and she has to take dramamine on long car rides. She only had to take this one day on our 5 day cruise. We didn't really feel too much motion on the Elation.

Just an FYI! If you are on blood thinner's check with your doctor before using the ginger. It's a natural blood thinner.

The worst thing you can do if you're seasick is lay down in your cabin! Go to one of the open air decks, be sure you have something in your stomach (not too hard on a cruise!), and try to concentrate on something besides the ship's motion.

I've also read (but not confirmed) that some ships are no longer giving out the free seasick meds, so don't count on that if you think you'll need something!

I've been prone to seasickness all my life, I've been on three cruise ships and took dramamine or bonine all three times and never had a problem. start taking them the night before. I always say 'what's the big deal?' its not like they cost alot and taking a pill once a day is so much nicer than the alternative

Just to start I bought the patch but never needed it the whole cruise, it was great even in rough seas. I did see that you can get pills on board at the shops, plus also at the infirmary on board.
This was our first cruise and it was fantastic even though weather could have been better.
Have a great time and enjoy every minute.

Default Motion Sickness

As with any medication, if you have a health condition you should consult your doctor.

I was wondering how much ginger people take? I have never heard anyone say?

I never leave the house without taking some motion sickness meds. before a cruise. I also start taking the meds. the night before.

There is a motion sickness that I have after the cruise is over when I am on dry land. Someone was telling me on one of the boards that there is a medical name for this. I don't remember the name, I should have written it down. It is bazaar, I have even heard people say they have this motion sickness even though they do not get sea sick on the ship. It is a rocking sensation which only seems to appear when you move. When I reach for my shoes I feel like I am going to fall on my head. My ent doctor had it too, he said it comes from your inner ear.

Before my last cruise a person told me to continue to take the motion sickness meds. after the cruise for about a week. I did, and much to my suprise the rocking sensation was considerably less.

B.J. I took 1 ginger pill in the morning, and one with dinner. That is what it said to do on the bottle..... it was wonderful.

I too have gotten sea sickness while on dry land, we always comment on how we can still feel the ship moving when we are off in port.

BJ - i have not had to rely on anything more than ginger-ale for my mild queezies, i will have a glass of ginger-ale at sail-away, and then if i feel the queezies coming on, i will grab a glass right away

We just got off the Ecstasy last Thursday. The seas were very rough on the way down to Cozumel. We went to the pursers desk and got our pills there. Reccomendations from crew were to eat apples. None were to be found until we were coming back and the seas had calmed down, so I cannot tell you if this truly works. I will look for some apples as I board on Dec. 2, just in case.

On my cruise, our last night we had 15 foot swells and were rockin and rolling side to side up on the 8th deck at the back of the boat. My wife got pretty sick to her stomach, we had the patches, she put one on, and I dont think it helped much. I put one on myself since I was still wanting to gamble as she headed for the cabin. It had no effect on me from what I could tell, my stomach was a little upset from the motion, but nothing that made me think I would be sick.

Nope, looked at several of the drug stores.......no pills. I did go to our local health store today and found some. I talked to the lady in there and she actually suggested the liquid. It's for morning sickness (thank goodness I don't need it for that). I told her what it was for and she said it was faster acting than the pill. I bought it. I REALLY don't think I will need it. But bought it just in case. Maybe I will never have to open it!! Just being prepared.

I buy the Equate brand Motion Sickness pills from Walmart. They work great, and only cost $2.00. I only take them when I absolutely need them, and they work immediately.

Don't worry. Have a great cruise.

Just don't wait too late. If you start feeling AT ALL sick, take it right away. Once you're really sick nothing seems to help much.
