Is it appropriate to tip the room steward an additional tip when you first meet to receive extra perks? I know that you tip the last evening but does tipping upon meeting for the first time get you extras? How would they remember which cabin you are in. If you tip when you first meet what kind of extras might you get?
This has always been a subject that there are a lot of different opinions on. Some say they slip the steward $20 or so up front, so they will get extra service, and it works. I've seen here that others say that if you do that, the steward assumes that you won't be tipping them anymore, so you get lousy service the rest of the week. I've never done it, and have always gotten superior service from the steward, but then I give them a bit extra at the end of the week.
It's up to you. You can give it a go if you wish. If I were to tip him a bit up front, just state that this is a little EXTRA for the excellent service you know he or she is going to give you all week.
I agree with Ken, SAY that you are giving them a little "extra."
I've tipped that extra upfront when I had a specific thing I wanted done during the week.

There has been a lot of discussion about tipping on these boards. Ask any TA an they will tell you that ALL TIPS either in the envelope, passed hand to hand or put on your account, end up pooled.
When you get excellent service from staff the BEST thing you can do for them is to mention them by name on comment cards, along with whatever specific service or attitude they gave. It can help them get a better job or choice assignment. 20 bucks dosen't change thier lives.
Some say that if you give "pre paid phone cards" they can keep them, and these are very usefull to folks far from home. Jimbo
