Default Phone Calls from Ports

Hi guys,
I'm a total green newbie here. My very first cruise is this Saturday, Dec. 2nd! I have a wonderful friend who is going to be home with my kids for the week, driving them to school, etc. but I want to be able to call my kids while I'm gone without it costing me 7-10 bucks a minute! I saw where I could buy a phone card in ports, Latidel or something like that and call home. Have any of you ever done this? Is it easy? Anything I need to know?? I know using the internet onboard is an option to but I heard its dialup speed! I'd rather hear my kids voices to. My cell provider is only in the US...I checked. Any tips you can give me are appreciated. My cruise ship is Carnival Glory and my ports are Cozumel, Belize, Costa Maya and Nassau. Thanks so much guys.

I'm sailing this Saturday, too!

I honestly don't remember in Costa Maya and Belize (I've done your itinerary), but in Nassau you can buy a BaTelco (Bahamas Telecommunications Co) phone card for $10 which has 10 minutes.

Don't remember the name of the provider in Cozumel, but it was also $1 per minute. Telecommunications stores are easy to find - most are right at the pier.

Have a great first cruise.

Elainmir, I am also sailing this Saturday - are you on the Glory? we have those ports too - I am taking my cell phone, I have Cingular and supposedly will have coverage, but if calling on the ship will cost me $2.49 per minute. and then various prices in the ports. Although my kids are adults, still want to call them and tell them we are on the ship, or call the office to gloat that I am on a sandy beach drinking a Corona or a foofoo drink. I am very excited, my first cruise, and trying to get all my stuff in the suitcase.

I was on The SENSATION this past October and while out in the middle of the sea my Cingular Cell Phone rang,
(I was just using it for a clock and alarm clock).
..I could not believe I got signal way out there.
I answered and talked to a friend in NY for 31 min. when I got my Bill the next month the one call cost me $69.00. so next time I go My Cell Phone stays in my Truck at the port.

Just my three cents

Cingular has several "international" plans. I don't have a plan, just pay a flat $1.99 per minute. And yes, I have to remember to turn my phone off. I don't want to be the receipient of phone calls while on a cruise...
