Default Cruise Directors...Do they make or break a cruise??

Well, you were curious enough to get this far and now that I have
your attention....I will pose the question. Do, can, will a
Cruise Director make or break a cruise??? My DH and I have
been on 8 cruises and our most memorable have had really good
Cruise Directors. What makes a good Cruise Director (CD)?
A good CD will give you the information you need at the time
without extra comments/bad jokes/or mumbling, while on the
PA system. A good CD will be available to talk or picture take
with passengers. He or she will not just direct events, they will
become part of the event making it fun for all. A excellent CD
will teach their social hosts to be open, fun, and receptive to all
passengers no matter how old. A good CD is open to passenger
problems, suggestions, or needs. On one of our cruises the CD
had an accent and we were unable to understand any of the PA
announcements due to the the accent and mumbling. On yet
another cruise, we were at the Captain's Reception and couples
in the crowd were being recognized. My DH talked with one of the
Social Hosts about recognizing all the service men and women that
were onboard. The response we received was very rude.!! But
on the other side of the coin....2 of our cruises have been just
wonderful due to the CD. You could tell he really loved his job
and the passengers. He and his Social Hosts made the cruise more
enjoyable by getting passengers involved so they could make the
most out of their cruise. After all....A Cruise Is What You Make Of It.!!
We cruised in July with this CD and on our first cruise in 2002. We
were planning a Caribbean cruise in Feb, but changed our plans
to cruise the Mexican Riveria on the Carnival Pride so we can again
have fun with Jeff Bronson.... 8)
Happy Sailing to all.......And how does your CD stack up????

I am totally indifferent to the CD. I don't really care, one way or the other. I take in the information I want and tune out the rest. The CD has no impact on how much I enjoy a cruise.

I'm with Ready2go-- I don't care one way or the other who is or is not the cruise director. I don't even care if they have one.
I do what I want and don't worry about the rest. I've heard all the jokes many times before--all the shopping do's and dont's, etc.
But that's just me. I'm sure there are lots of folks who want / need a cruise director.

Same here, of the 10 cruises I've been on, I only remember a couple CD's. I could care less who the CD is, I don't go to most of the deck games, don't go to the shopping talks or the debarkation talks. The only time I ever see the CD is at the nightly shows.

I've found that most of them get on my nerves.

Make or break? NO!

But an entertaining one makes it that much better. I'd rather have a Robin WIlliams type up there than a Robert Frost. And the worst would be a Robert Frost trying to be a Robin Williams.

A good cruise director infects his/her passengers. And can actually make the experience unique.

It's nice that no two cruises have been the same for me!

I agree with MrPete. A good CD , who trains his people the correct way to handle the games, and more importantly the passengers can make a cruise "extra special". A bad CD, on the other hand, can have the effect of putting a bit of a damper on all activities aboard ship, and therefore cause the whole cruise to be somewhat of a "downer". We sailed, recently, on a ship where you never, and I mean NEVER saw the CD. When she saw you coming, she would hide so that she didn't have to speak to you. Her entire staff was, to one degree or the other, the same as her! Did it ruin our cruise? NO, not at all, but it was the talk of the ship.

[/b]Out of all my cruises, the better CD's stand out and you remember them, their names, etc. I think having a good cruise director does have some impact on the whole cruise. Its nice to have someone out there, with a friendly "hello" when in ports or walking around the ship. Of course, the funnier they are, the better.

Thanks for the replies...........just wanted to get some opinions.
A bad CD will not break my cruise, but a good one sure makes
it more fun.
I hope everyone has a great cruising time in 07.
Happy Sailing................

The most important thing a CD does is behind the scenes and will never truly be appreciated because we (the cruisers) are not even aware of it...unless something goes wrong.

CD to not make or break...they are like the whipped cream on my banana split. (just that little extra that I don't need but do enjoy)

The best thing about CDs to me is when you watch them "grow up" through the process. When you have sailed with them many times as karaoke hosts, social hosts, assistant cd and then POW they are a Cruise Director...it is like watching a family friend "grow up".

I was not that aware of our CD on our first cruise, but then 6 months later I did a back to back, with Todd, and Jorge. They changed the way I feel about CD's. Both are funny(Jorge had me laughing over getting off the ship) both made things more enjoyable, and I was sad to leave them.

They can not break a cruise, but they also can make it more enjoyable.

I don't care about the CD. Won't make or break my cruise.

We have only cruised two other ships but after spending a five day with Big Tex and Ms Tex on the Fantasy, I say, the CD can definitly make the cruise more fun and bring an air of excitement to most days.

We had some crummy weather this past week and Tex was a great diversion. He interacts well and gives his crew members all the credit...you can't help but like him.

I would have to say for us, they have no impact on our having a good time..The only I remember is Ken Rush, because he came across as boorish, and thought he was a ladies man.

Unless I see their name again and it sounds familiar I couldn't even tell you who our CD's were! They make no difference to us. Usually, the only time we see a CD is on the Morning Show on the TV.

We just came back from a cruise last week and I can't tell you who the CD was !

A cruise director doesnt really affect my fun unless he is horrible. A bad CD or ACD can get annoying because they are at every show and function.

I was noticing that ACD Noonan on the Fantasy often seemed like he was at the end of his rope. It did take some of the fun away because it seemed like he didnt want to be there or he was just going through the motions.

Good or bad they are all pretty fake in my opinion. They do the job day in, day out for months at a time. Think about telling the same jokes and stories and introducing he same shows and similar acts over and over in a 3,5,or 7 day cycle depending on how often the ship goes out. Those of you that have been on the same ship 2 times in a year have likely heard the same jokes and stories repeated. They also have to deal with loud drunks and some annoying people. Im not faulting them, I think its a difficult job. Most of us would find it hard to be genuine and nice and original to everyone after doing the job for a long time. I couldnt be a CD, i dont have the patience.

We had ACD Noonan on our last cruise and he seemed to be alot better than our CD Rebecca. He was probably just having a bad week or something. I've only been on two cruises, but between her and Mark Price, Price wins by a long shot. It's not that Rebecca wasn't a good CD, she was just plain annoying. She was one of those people who tried to make jokes that weren't funny, and at every event the last thing she would say was, "Drive Safely!" It got super annoying towards the end of the ship, she even said it if we were at port!
