Hello I just got back from Cruise #4 for the year and maybe I missed this post but I will add it now. As of about a month ago whenever you are still in a port in Florida you will be charged 7% TAX on anything you but IE Drinks before you sail. We were in Miami getting reay to set sail when we noticed this Does anyone else have any info if they are doing this on all Cruise lines Drop some info JD

I don't think this is unusually. You are in the state when you board, and are charged sales tax. Is that what you mean?

No I mean Now you are getting charged sales tax for Florida when you buy drinks on the boat. This is a new thing Just started. When you set sail they stop charging tax.

No, just FL ports. It sounds like the Sate of Florida wants some additional tax $$$.

It just doesn't surprise me. I would not be surprised if Texas was not doing it as well.

If you are planning to buy soda cards wait until you have been out to sea awhile. I've heard that they charge state taxes on them too.

Just got of RCCL Monarch of the Seas. They charged Calif. sales tax when in port in San Pedro, San Diego and Catalina.

They are required to charge you sales tax when in any US port. They can also enforce the no smoking in the work place law here in florida while in port ( covers up to 3 miles on atlantic side and 9 miles on gulf side ). They dont enforce it for some strange reason. I go on casino boats that are not US flagged and they have to go by that rule. Those boats also charge sales tax while in US waters.

I know sound kinda wierd to me. Either charge us all the time or dont charge us at all.

Tim

Frankly, if I'm on a cruise, and can't afford to pay an additional 35 cents for the $5 foo-foo drink I'm enjoying on deck before sailing, I shouldn't be on the ship anyway. (of course, if I was on shore, I'd still be paying the 7% tax) If you're in a U.S. port, you can bet they'll get all the taxes they can from you.
You could just wait until you sail to get that pina-colada and avoid the tax!
