Default help! What to do in Jamaica

We just received our documents and it is official. Now what to do in Jamaica? We didn't see any of the island on the last cruise. We just spent the day at Sunset Beach. However this time we would like to see some of the sights on the island. We are not big on excursions. Any recommendations? I heard that as long as you take the goverment taxis with the red license plates you are pretty safe. Can anyone help us?

Thanks,
Barbara

You know you can rent those taxis for the day. We always do excursions, but if you can come up with some places you want to see, they will take you. Which port will you be coming to?

Dunns Falls and the raft ride on the river are popular, but I did a Black River safri to see the crocodiles.
Mo Bay is a place to either stay on the ship or do a shore excursion, but not to explore on one's own.

Hi Barbara,

While the Dunn's River Falls excursion is popular IMO it would be better to wait until you take another cruise and dock in Ocho Rios. The tour from Montego Bay is 6 to 7 hours and most of that is on a bus!

I'm kind of conflicted on both Luanne's post and Thoth's post . I think you'd be fine renting a taxi (JUTA) to see what you want to, but personally I feel safer on a ship's tour in Jamaica. You might get a wonderful driver, but you also might get one who takes you to undesirable places and wants you to buy drugs, no matter what you requested.

I guess it all depends on your "adventure" level !

A disclaimer is due...that's simply MY experience so I don't wish to mislead anyone.

Even if you decide to do something on your own, I would stay with a group. We had a group of six and did fine. All we did, though, was to have a bus/van driver drop us off at Margaritaville. We decided on a time for him to pick us up and he was there to take us back to the ship. We stayed at Margaritaville for about an hour and then we walked to Doctor Cave Beach which was a short distance from Margaritaville. No one bothered us. We stayed there about an hour or so and then walked back to Margaritaville where our driver was waiting for us. Our driver was very funny and very helpful. He warned us about people trying to sell you drugs, and told us that Jamaica was a very poor country with a high crime rate. He also told us to just say, "No thanks", and keep on walking if anyone approached us and asked if we wanted any dope.

I enjoyed seeing Jamaica and I'm glad I went, but I really don't have any great desire to go back there.

Good luck and have a great time. Just be careful.

Go to Doctor's Cave Beach, snorkle and drink Red Stripe beer.

Dunn's River Falls is a very nice excursion but, too far from Mo Bay for a day trip.

The high crime rate is more prevalent in the city of Kingston which is in the southern part of the island.

I've been to Mo Bay a few times and the only annoyances, we encountered, were the street vendors.

Our first time in Ocho Rios, we swam at the beach directly in front
of the ship. It costs about $3.25pp. It is a nice beach with motorized
equipment for rent. We had fun, but did not venture out due to being
hounded by the locals.
The second time in Ocho Rios, we went to Jimmy Buffets, Maragaritaville.
It is located in the Island Village. Once you leave the security area,
just walk across the parking lot and keep to the right on the side walks.
You will come up on the opening to the Island Village. There are
plenty of shops and restaurants. At Jimmy buffets, you can swim in
the pool, beach, hot tub, listen to music and enjoy food/drink. All
you have to do is purchase 2 drinks. And you can have the "birdman"
make you a bird from tropical leaves. We had such a fun time.
Enjoy your time in Ocho Rios.
Happy Sailing.................
