Default Cheap Parking in New Orleans?

I'm trying to find a cheap place to park my car in New Orleans, instead of the Port parking lots. They usually run around $12 a day. We've found cheaper places in Galveston, and Mobile, and I was hoping somebody knew of one in New Orleans! Please let me know, if there is one for less! Thanks!

Are you driving straight through? If not, check on the motel you are staying at the night before.

I would use the cruise parking. The nearby neighborhoods are not safe. I was down there a week ago for work. I was in one of the neighborhoods by the cruise terminal and drove through a drug bust on a street corner. If you are passing through Slidell, stop at Randazzo's to get a king cake! The hotels do not offer free parking and their parking is much higher than $12.00 per day. There are still plenty of rebuilding crews in the area with a lot of transient traffic. Better safe than sorry! The tourist areas are safe and up and running. I think the Riverwalk has some shops open and if you have time to eat, catch a cab to Mother's. The Aquarium is open and the IMAX theater has a great show about Hurricane Katrina. I think you can get tickets online. Use the cruise parking.

Parking right there at the port is $14.00 a day, but I would highly recommend it. The only people coming in and out of that garage are cruise people.

The hotels used to offer some precruise park and cruise packages but they are not as available since Katrina. The area is working hard to recoup some heavy losses and the expense of building that new cruise terminal.

Parking at a hotel runs anywhere from $22 to 28 a night. Even if you use free points (like we did at the Holiday Inn on Royal) you still have to pay for parking.

Also be aware that shops at the Riverwalk pretty much shut down at 5:30pm (at least during the week). But is slowly coming back. Cafe Du Monde is open back up but they closed at 5:30pm on the Wednesday night we were there.

The good news is that if you are driving in and it is pouring down rain....not to worry.

We left the Holiday Inn Thursday morning in a DOWN POUR. When we arrived at the port, we immediately turned right into the parking garage (don't be fooled into going straight to drop off your luggage...that is for people who are not parking). We paid our fee of $56.00 and then pulled into a lane where our porters were waiting. It was about 10:30am and it was extremely relaxed and COVERED!!! The porter greeted us with a Merry Christmas... checked our documentation, wrote his number on our documents (Number 41) so that we would know which porter checked our luggage ... we gave him our luggage and the tip and then drove up to level 5 to park (still completely covered) and took the elevator back down to level 2.

The whole process we did not have to step in water or get a drop of rain water on us! It was wonderful.

It was well worth the $14 a day not to have to worry about our vehicle.

Will do!! I remember a great gyro place next to Krogers. We loved to eat there all the time. I can't remember the name, but they had the best food.

My brother just sold his home in Bridlewood, near the Reservoir . We used to drive through every now and then to see the changes.

I lived at 88 Woodgate "100 years ago" and we lived on Cherry Drive the last time in what WAS the new section of Crossgates. It is old now.
We went to Park Place Baptist Church and I bought all my furniture from Miskelly's....whew that was a long walk down memory lane!!

Wow ! It is a small world ! The place next to Kroger is called Kismets. And there still serving up good food.
Another good place to eat now is called C-Paws. They have BBQ, Hamburgers, other sandwiches, and some of the best steaks you'll ever put in your mouth
Happy New Year;

We are so glad the New Orleans port is up and going again.

LHP

Can you tell me when your ship was scheduled to leave the port? We are leaving on the Fantasy at 4:00 p.m. on a Saturday in March. When should we try and board the ship?

Thanks

JCpatt,
We always arrive around 11.00 am . Drop off our luggage, and go park. You should be on the ship by 12.00 noon, eating lunch .

Happy Cruising to all:
David
