Default Don't you hate it when people down cruise lovers??

I hate it when people down me for cruising! It seems I'm the only one in my department that loves cruising. Excuses............expensive (yes, I'm spoiled and love the balcony), viruses (they think you only catch things on the cruise), no land (hell, what's a cruise for)?, can't get off ship - claustrophobic?? I get tired of trying to convince people, so I just come back to the board where WE all LOVE cruising!

I think people that haven't cruised just don't get it. Some of the ones who have and aren't crazy about, may of just been on the wrong ship at the wrong time, who knows, but don't change a thing..:-)

I know -- on all the cruises I have been on we have had some ups and downs. But.......a cruise is what YOU make of it. Carnival has bent over backwards to make the few mishaps that happened up to us and cruise passengers. I just wish EVERYONE would enjoy it as much as I do! :-)

Some people would complain if it was served up on a silver platter. It's their loss, IMO.

Speak for yourself. I hate cruising, but am addicted. I can't help it !! So I book one every year ! I desperately want to be like normal people, but I'm too darned giddy. Why? Because of cruises.!!! Like at work, when my co-workers complain how they hate their jobs, I'm left out of the conversation because I'm destined for a cruise and I just can't be miserable. I waste good money on these vacations, money that could have been squirrelled away. Chances are I'll need to be buried in a plain casket, and not one of those deluxe models. And I know all my talk of Mayan temples and exotic wildlife must bore some crazy. Because of my eccentric interest, I'm ALWAYS behind on petty gossip. I want to be normal !!
Alright seriously, tongue back in cheek.....
These people don't know much about our cruise ships. They don't read up on facts. Do they truly realize that this ship is 1000 feet long, or 13 stories, or carries at least 3000 people.? They think they will be sailing on the SS Minnow or something.
We cruiser are a different breed and need to interact.

Default People who have never been just do not understand!

I went om my first cruise in April. Yes, I too wondered what all the hipe was about and did alot of research before going. I love it and am now hooked. When I came home that is all I could talk about and needless to say my husband was sick of hearing it. As it turns out we were given a family cruise for Christmas. 13 of us all together. 3 families that had never all been together at the same time. But this time we would. Everyone else had cruised except for my DH and 4 DS's. We excepted the Christmas present. As time grew closer I could see my husband getting a little excited. So we boarded, got unpacked and went to sit on our balcony to watch the sunset with drinks in hand as we sailed away from Miami. My DH husband puts his arm around me gives me a kiss and says "NOW I UNDERSTAND". Yes he had a great time. So now that we are home I have caught him several times looking at the carnival book. Maybe he will plan the next one!

I had to treat the lovely Mrs. Jones (Vita) like "Mr. T" to get her on her first cruise, and I believe because it was our honeymoon is the only reason she went. Now, some 50 cruises later for her, we can't get enough. Same with my brothers and their familys. We agreed to a "reunion" cruise so no one would have to do all the work, and they too are very anxious to get back aboard. I guess if everyone knew the secrets of cruising, the prices would skyrocket, and we wouldn't be able to go as often as we like because of the demand. Let's count our blessings!

I know Cheryl, I hear the same thing. I get asked all the time, WHY do we go on these cruises My answer to them is," Go on one a see why"
As for us, We're counting the days down to our next cruise. We've got a long way to go, but it will be here soon

I too, once poo-pooed going on a cruise. Just never had any interest. I'd rather spend a week at a tropical island than on a ship. I just never caught the bug.

Then my sister in summer of 2004 suggested going on a cruise. Cruise lines were making news about bigger ships, things to do and alot more advertising was being seen on TV mainly by Carnival.

Anyway, she wanted to go during hurricane season of 2005 (cheaper prices) and told me "there will be no hurricanes, don't worry about it". Well, lo & behold it was one of the worst hurricane seasons in history!

Back to summer, 2004 - I spoke this in length with my darling BF, who said he would be bored, nothing to do, etc, etc. He said he would be like the guy on the commerical, "Oh I have plenty to do" and you see him constantly sleeping at every destination.

Well, convinced him to go & off we all went in April, 2005. HAD A BLAST! Got bit hard by the cruise bug. We missed alot of ship activities because of all the ports we hit (Southern Caribbean, island everyday except 1 sea day).

But the funny part was, the last day which was sea day, we were on deck 5 heading back to PR and there were lots of lounge chairs facing the islands out of the sun (sun was facing the ship on the other side). Needless to say, BF joined the commercial & wound up falling asleep in one of those lounge chairs at 2pm in the afternoon to the gentle rolling of the ship. It's been a running joke since then & we're more than ready to take another cruise.

When my wife read this she couldn't wait to share it with me. We'll be going on our 5th cruise in 7 days - can't wait!! Once again we get the same comments at work -"must be nice to be able to afford a cruise - can't hide money" or " oh, going on ANOTHER cruise?". We both work 2 jobs and are far from wealthly. I've tried to tell them that it really is cheaper than many vacations if you shop the deals and don't go crazy in the casino or with on-shore excursions. As much as we love to share the buildup to the departure and the fun we had when we get back, we've started keeping it more to ourselves with 'non-cruisers'. Meanwhile we'll keep enjoying the best vacation deal out there and leave the marketing to the cruise lines.

Welcome to CruiseMates! I totally understand your feelings. Let me invite you to come to the boards and share with us. There are lots of us here that will share your excitement and joy, while we are waiting our turn to sail. Since you both work 2 jobs, it may not be often, but you are always welcome!

Boy, are we tired of hearing that! We not only get it from work, but from DH's family. We don't even tell anyone close to us that we're going on a cruise anymore . They seem to think (no matter what we say) that if you're cruising you're rich!

That's why I LOVE this site! Everyone understands!

Most of the negative comments I get are from people who have never cruised. We took a family group this past month and most were first time cruisers, they're hooked! Every single one of them are now talking about "next time". I think it is the best kept secret in travel.

Happy New year!

Hi paddletoe53,

Let me explain, please ! Will, paddletoe53's post was clear to me! She doesn't spend her extra money like some people do, she saves it to cruise. When she's saved enough she books a cruise. She took her mother on her first cruise and she loved it, too! They're ready to book their fourth cruise.

Is that right, paddletoe53?

Hope this helps, Will!

I get hassled by the people who swear by the all inclusive resorts in Mexico. They think that is the only way to vacation. I tell them that they don't know what they are missing by not cruising
