Default Pre-Night Stay in Miami

Can anybody let me know of a good place to stay for a pre-night stay in Miami?

Embassy Suites is 1/2 mile from the airport and 5 miles from the port. Provides shuttle to both.
Lounge and restaurant on site.

If you're going to stay the night in Miami, stay somewhere besides the airport area, that's boring.

I always stay downtown at the Holiday Inn Port of Miami. It's directly across the street from Bayside Marketplace. Bayside has lots of stores, restaurants, musicians, artists, street performers, etc. It's lots of fun. You can even have breakfast there on a balcony overlooking Biscayne Bay and the cruise ships.

They don't provide a shuttle to the port, but it's only an $8 taxi ride.

I mentioned Embassy Suites because we have two choices flying in from the NW:
Red Eye the night before and arrive at 8 am....not!
Or leave at a decent hour the day before and arrive late...10pm.

Post cruise we are staying for two days to enjoy the Boat Show

I have stayed at the Embassy Suites before..... The rooms themselves seem a little worn. However, the atrium was real nice. The hotel is not in the best of neighborhoods, and is surrounded by walls/fencing. If I recall correctly, there is only one entrance into the fenced in area, and a security guard is always stationed at that entrance. (By the way, this is typical for hotels in Miami). Great breakfast in the morning, and like the previous poster stated, shuttle service is available.

Loan,
I seem to remember hearing that Miami is one of the most dangerous places for tourists.
I stayed at the Oakland Airport Hilton last month and the guard was wearing a shoulder arm!

I have to agree with Irish Girl We always stay at the Holiday in Port of Miami. We've stayed there for our last 3 cruises and we're going again Feb 11th/07. The location is great with bayside market across the street and shopping just two blocks down. We've never had any problems, but we're not out wandering the streets late at night either! lol And the rates are very reasonable!! Good luck and have a wonderful time!!

just a footnote on the Embassy Suites, they are getting to be really pricey, and they no longer have the complimentary shuttle service
We are staying at the Holiday Inn Doral area for our upcoming cruise.

At the risk of high jacking this thread for personal reasons:

Without any real knowledge of Miami I let our TA book our rooms.
We are landing in Miami at 10 pm on Saturday. Ship departs at 8 pm Sunday. I THOUGHT Embassy Suites was ideal because it is 1/2 mile from the airport and 5 from the terminal. Also thought they had a shuttle to both so we didn't get stuck with 60.00 in transfer fees.

Ship returns at 8 am on Friday. Have a car reserved at the airport so we can spend the day at the boat show and goof off around Miami. We have reservations at the Extended Stay Homestead (Embassy was booked).Return flight is at 11 am on Saturday.

I have two weeks or so to change these bookings.
Any recommendations from experience will be greatl appreciated.

Get your rental car through Thrifty or Alamo.... Both companies will shuttle you to the port when you drop the car at their airport locations. If you do that, it won't matter what hotel you stay in (at least as far as shuttle to the port is concerned).

I'll third the motion of the Holiday Inn downtown. Very clean, with great service. Even has an on-site dining area. They have some of the best blueberry pancakes I've ever ate
Bayside is across the street, which also has numerious eating places also. Hardrock cafe, and ect.

I haven't looked since last May, but ours was $125.00 per night.

We had to book at the Hampton Inn due to most of the hotels near the port being booked.

I just switched to the BW Inn and Suites for the pre night. Wasn't able to find anything tasty for the post night so we are staying with the Homestead.
Booked a car for the pre and post nights.
Post was more than TWICE than the pre. Must be due to the boat show being held that weekend.

I am cruising on the Carnival Valor on Sunday May 20 out of Miami. I want to stay Friday and Saturday night in Southbeach. Prices are high right now so I’m waiting to see if they come down any. I stayed at the National Hotel in Miami Beach last year. It was very nice.

Miami Beach is not very far from the port. It is a 10-15 minute drive or less. Southbeach is pricier than an airport hotel or the Holiday Inn, but there are a lot of advantages; the beach and hundreds of bars and restaurants.

As anyone here ever stayed in Miami Beach prior to a cruise and do you have any recommendations?

The wife and I stayed at the Holiday Inn downtown. Very clean motel. Had great service. Would diffently stay there again.

Yes, wait till after the super bowl, and check around. But do make them asap.
Happy Cruising to all;
